In the wake of the recent massacre in Eretz Yisroel, CGI Poconos has initiated a comprehensive plan to support its campers facing the surge of antisemitism worldwide. CGI Poconos, known for its commitment to fostering a sense of community and Jewish pride among its campers, is intensifying its efforts to address these events’ profound impact on its youth.
As the world grapples with the aftermath of tragic incidents, social media platforms have become flooded with distressing scenes and sentiments that instill horror and fear. While these challenges are difficult even for adults to navigate, the impact on Jewish youth is even more profound, especially when faced with such images without the immediate support of a close-knit community.
Imagine going to sleep with the haunting scenes of a massacre or witnessing the unsettling visuals of an antisemitic rally on an American college campus. Now, picture experiencing this without the comfort of a Jewish community to provide much-needed support and a space to share one’s Jewish pride. This harsh reality is currently affecting CGI Poconos’ youth, who, in addition to the trials of the COVID era, are now grappling with the emotional toll of recent global events.
Heartbreakingly, we have received distressing accounts from our campers that underscore the urgency of a response,” said Gershon Sandler, Executive Director Of CGI Poconos. “A 9-year-old camper, Emma (name changed for privacy), recently made a chilling comment to her mother: “Maybe if I became Christian, I wouldn’t get killed.” Another camper, 13-year-old camper Nicole (name changed for privacy), has expressed thoughts of self-harm due to the overwhelming circumstances.”
In response to these distressing developments, CGI Poconos is launching a revamped Camper Engagement Office dedicated to addressing this crisis. The primary goal is to provide much-needed Jewish pride and a sense of belonging for its network of campers and alumnae.
The Camper Engagement Office is developing a comprehensive action plan, including initiatives such as holiday packages, reunions, Shabbatons, virtual connections, and more. CGI Poconos aims to create a supportive environment where campers can find strength, resilience, and community in these challenging times.
“The newly revamped Camper Engagement Office, designed to address the impact on our campers stemming from the current global landscape, will build upon last year’s successes,” said Moshe Browd, Director of Growth and Operations. “The groundbreaking concept we pioneered last year, introducing year-round, full-time programs and initiatives for our campers, was a resounding success, and we are dedicated to revitalizing these programs to create a supportive environment for our campers.”
As CGI Poconos takes a proactive approach to navigate the challenges presented by recent global events, the camp remains steadfast in its commitment to fostering a sense of pride and community among its campers. By uniting in support, we can provide a beacon of hope and resilience for the youth who need it most.
