A Crown Heights family of six has fallen upon difficult times and is facing eviction. After suffering from health conditions, they were saddled with crippling medical debt. These unexpected expenses and trouble with business led to this financial crisis. They haven’t been able to pay rent for more than six months, and eviction papers have been filed.
The Rebbe’s love for every Jew is legendary, and going out of our way to help a fellow Jew was the theme of the very first Maamar the Rebbe taught us — Basi Legani — in which an example of each Rebbe’s Ahavas Yisroel is brought, from cutting wood and cooking soup for a postpartum mother to giving money to a Yid in need before even beginning Shacharis. And the Rebbe’s father, HoRav Levi Yitzchok, literally gave his life for the physical and spiritual benefit of his fellow Jews.
As we approach the holy day of Chof Av, let’s emulate the example of the Rebbeim and put the needs of our fellow Jews on the front burner.
A small campaign is being held today to help this family out of the crisis they are in and to prevent them from becoming homeless R”L.

Ty for helping crown heights
It’s a very difficult moment for this family. Let’s help them now to make them feel stable .
Please pass on this info to the family:

The city has a program that can help, which can only be accessed if the person has an eviction order in hand!
It’s called FEHPS (or FEPS).
I went through a similar situation over 15 years ago.
They helped with overdue rent, and once accepted into the program, they paid my rent for several months until I was back in my feet!
Have them contact the city, info is in the link I included herein.
To elaborate on the above, the City has been known to assist in back rent including the amount needed above. In fact if they apply that can and should help the eviction case. It will give them more time to get the money. The program is called One Shot Deal. The basic criteria is that the family needs future ability to pay the rent going forward and/or a third party support, which means that a friend, family member or organization would sign a letter that they will be helping to support the family. I recommend that they work with a… Read more »
My gut tells me that having an involved and assertive elected official advocating for you will be MUCH better than trying to connect the dots yourself or through small /local offices. Does anyone have a name to suggest of a City or State official with a track record for successfully getting things done to contact ?
Best of Luck !!
City Fehps can help going forward. Its definitely worth applying
Much success!
we must help this family
but if they have fallen so far behind how will they continue going forward
crown heights has become a very expensive zip code
families that can’t afford of which there is no shame must move upstate, rabbonim should encourage this as we cant set people up to fail
The Rebbe fought adamnatly against chassidim leaving Crown Heights despite the exorbitant price of living and other hardships.
Why would rabbonim encourage people to do something the Rebbe begged them not to do?
And if someone does so, at least they should be ashamed.
Is NOT the answer!
Standing up to Realtors/Developers and Landlords/Brokers is the Answer!!!! They currently have NO ONE to answer to when they charge such high rent for terrible living spaces! The Rebbe already warned us about not using his name to charge high rent!
The more people put up with this, the more Yeshiva families will be FORCED OUT of Crown Heights. This is not what the Rebbe wanted!!!
AGREE!!!!!
To every single word!!
TRUE ,TRUE , TRUE
It’s true galus
The prices are too high!!! Too much! The landlords have been asked multiple times not to increase the prices, but when it’s coming into money, who needs Rebbe? When it comes to money – who speaks of Ahavas Yisroel? Come on! Money! Money!
Where is the Rabbonim? Why are they not doing anything? This problem is widespread in Jewish neighborhoods, not just in CH, and is affecting many areas, not just CH.
Agree that rent is high — but it doesn’t start and end with rent. Yes, the tycoons can probably keep rent low — but for the regular single apartment landlord who has everything going up in cost, it just gets passed along. The moisdos have raised tuition because their expenses have gone up etc. etc. It’s a vicious cycle.
When the rebbe said that and to whom?
Thanks

obvi we must never abandon crown Hts its our center and must be kept strong and jewish.
yet having upstate alternatives is massive, look what other hasidim have achieved. taking over community boards, elected their own, rent controlled, control of services, schools and infrastructure etc etc
how many postings like this will it take…
