This past Sunday, the Brooklyn Heights Jewish Academy (BHJA) organized a free Science Fair in Brower Park in an effort to bring educational fun to the community and to network with potential parents. It was a sunny and breezy day, perfect for a fair in the park, and over 300 people turned out to enjoy the day.
The event was organized and staffed by parent volunteers, who painted faces, and made jars of slime and lava lamps with the children. The Crazy Scientist performed two exciting and interactive science shows. There was also a booth with juice and plenty of water to stave off the heat, as well as other delicious snacks. A mitzvah booth offered matzah for Pesach Sheni. The park was full of excited children running from booth to booth trying to complete all the activities.
The Brooklyn Heights Jewish Academy was founded by Rabbi Aaron L. and Mrs. Shternie Raskin, building on their successful preschool program, Gan Menachem, Kiddie Korner. Concluding its fourth year, BHJA offers comprehensive Judaic and General Studies education, according to NYS Regents and Common Core standards, with a strong ethos of academic rigor and community. Classes are capped at 15 students, and small class sizes and dedicated teachers ensure that every child receives warm, individualized attention to help him or her grow and learn, academically, socially, and emotionally.
BHJA also offers extracurriculars, including basketball and tennis. There is also a school chess team, which has competed in several tournaments this year and won some trophies.
Rabbi Yeshayahu Greenfeld, BHJA’s Educational Director, brings immense expertise, as well as grace and joy, as an educator and educational leader. He has served as dean and principal at reputable day schools such as North Shore Hebrew Academy, Yeshivat Rambam, and Yeshiva of Flatbush.
Rabbi Greenfeld noted that, “In the true spirit of Chabad’s philosophy of ופרצת ימה וקדמה צפונה ונגבה I very much enjoyed watching parents and children joining our program in the Brower park. It remains our hope that a good impression of our academy was left, and new families will join us for next year.”
BHJA’s motto and guiding principles are “Love of G-d; Love of Torah; Love of Israel,” and indeed the school is infused with love and light.
