Boutique Reggio Preschool Expands in North Crown Heights

Finding the perfect preschool for your child can be daunting. Parents analyze all options, hoping to find a group of teachers they can entrust with their precious children.

“Our greatest wish is that our daughter is happy, loved and well cared for at school,” says Anna, the parent of a three-year-old, “and that has been the case all year at the Gan.”

Brownstone Gan Katan Preschool is a boutique Reggio inspired school located in North Crown Heights. “The preschool is a second home to the children,” says educational director Esty Tzap. “The teachers go out of their way to be warm and loving, really reaching to every child on their level to give them what they need.”

BGK was born as young couples began to settle their families in Brooklyn instead of moving to the suburbs. “The community blossomed,” says director Chaya Kirschenbaum. The growing Jewish community created a high demand for quality Jewish day care. So in 2011, the Kirschenbaums opened The Gan. What began as a community daycare has grown into an in-demand preschool of excellence, complete with a team of fully licensed and accredited teachers.

The Reggio inspired environment at Gan Katan focuses on hands-on activities to empower students’ curiosity, exploration, and response. The high student-to-teacher ratio encourages teachers to be in sync with every child’s educational and social-emotional goals.

“Our daughter just goes running into school,” says Anna. “She’s just so happy to be there. I feel that she is cared for as well as we would.” Parents feel secure, knowing that the small class size means that teachers care for each individual child.

This year, in response to overwhelming parental requests, BGK has expanded to include children through age five. Their new state-of-the-art facility boasts bright, modern classrooms, and a beautiful private backyard space — all in North Crown Heights.
