Chabad bochurim of Albany, NY, returning from Yeshivos around the world, organized a mini Yeshiva during Pesach, and published a Torah Journal “Kel-Bnay” (like the “Albany!” sounding Seder Piyut).
The 6th Kel-Bnay issue includes Albany alumni essays in both Hebrew and English, plus guest contributor R’ Avishai Elboim, chief librarian at Tel Aviv’s “Sifriyat HaRambam” on the Haggadah’s Maaseh B’Rabi Eliezer.
Albany’s Torah journal also discovers a local connection to the famous Rav Elchonon Wasserman HY”D, a prominent rabbi and rosh yeshiva in pre-World War II Europe who was one of the Chofetz Chaim’s closest disciples.
Visiting Albany in 1938, R. Elchonon described his fundraising in the local Jewish community a $5 pledge by two partners. Albany residents recall that he stayed at the home of R. Zalman Levine (son of the “Malach”) who lived in the Delaware Ave. area.
This Kovetz is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Leonard Morgenbesser z”l, a friend of Albany’s Maimonides School, and activist for Jewish issues in the Capital Region, who passed away on Erev Pesach.

With all due respect to Rabbi Wasserman and yourself Chabad Lubavitch was on the scene doing Kiruv work some 200 plus years although you didn’t hear about is because we didn’t have all the modern communication and trasportation we have now we don’t own Kiruv and everybody is welcome to join or jump on the band wagon as long as its done with love for another Jew.

Rav Elchonon was a great tzaddik and talmid muvchak of the Chofetz Chaim zt”l. My rosh yeshivah was his son Rav Simcha Wasserman ztl in California (Or Elchonon) and he did kiruv way before Chabad was on the scene. Besides learning from him and hearing numerous stories regarding his father and the CC, I NEVER once heard from him a disparaging word against Chabad or the Rebbe
