After an extensive search by numerous rescue workers, the body of a frum young man who disappeared Monday night while swimming off the coast of a Tel Aviv beach was found.
Yehoshua Ben Paz, a 25-year-old father of two from the Givat Shaul neighborhood of Jerusalem and a student in Rabbi Shalom Ber Sorotzkin’s Kollel, had been missing since last night after entering the sea near the Dolphinarium in Tel Aviv.
His body was found after 10-hour search and was identified by his family.
MDA paramedic Daniel Goss, who was at the scene throughout the night, said: “Near midnight, we were called to a possible drowning near the Dolphinarium. An intensive care unit arrived at the scene, seeing a 25-year-old young man who was upset. He told us that he and another young man were swimming in the sea when, at one point, he heard his friend screaming, after which he immediately disappeared into the water.
“He explained that he left the water to call for help. Naval police, helicopters and a large force arrived and searched throughout the night. There were also family members, friends and citizens who came to help. This morning, close to 10 a.m., an MDA team pulled from the sea a 25-year-old youth with no signs of life and had to declare his death.”
MDA added that: “We urge all citizens not to enter the sea in any way on unspecified beaches, and certainly not at night, when there are no lifeguards on the beach.”
There is a huge lack of common sense with these young guys who decide to go night swimming on a beach with no lifeguard; or who use some lake or well as a mikveh; or who go boating with no life vest. Is it that they think they’re invincible or that they swim well enough, or it won’t happen to them? How many almonehs & young Yesomim are there just this summer? How many fathers are saying Kaddish for their adult sons? The 3 weeks are over so we shouldn’t be careful any more? I don’t understand this foolhardiness. If… Read more »
You have stated what should be common sense so very eloquently. One thing that really bothers me is seeing so many hikers in the White Mountains of NH wearing the same leather soles shoes worn in NYC. Rocks, Moss, leaves etc can be dangerously slippery endangering not only the person but the people who may have to provide rescue. Common sense to all.
Common sense comes with education. If one did not grow up doing outdoor activites such as going to the beach or hiking its easy not to know basic, common sense rules. Maybe schools start giving out a quick safety course prior to summer breaks or educational pamphlets.
Most rules are stated by the beach however I’ve seen in Florida many frum men will go beyond the lifeguard areas due to tznius which is very dangerous as well.
