A Chabad summer camp, which is the light of the year for Jewish boys from broken homes in Ukraine, is trying to pull through despite losing its financial backing.
Shluchim in Ukraine who for the last 12 years provided funds for Camp Yeka have notified that they will no longer be able to do so this summer.
But Chabad bochurim were staffed the camp in previous years are pitching in to make it happen nevertheless.
“Most of these boys are orphans or come from broken and dysfunctional homes where hunger and abuse are rampant,” one of them explained.
“The thought of them not having Camp Yeka is worse than taking on the difficult task of raising the necessary funds for the summer experience they so desperately need,” he explained.
So far, COLlive.com was told, the bochurim was raised funds that will cover the campgrounds near the city of Zhitomer, and for a full time cook.
The camp has a full range of activities and sports, serves hot nourishing meals, and takes the boys on exciting trips, all while teaching them Torah and infusing them with Jewish pride.
Often faced with anti-Semitism in their respective villages, these boys can discover and explore their rich Jewish heritage, and meet other Jewish children.
They make life-long friendships with fellow campers and counselors, built on acceptance and trust. These friendships, and the powerful camp experience, strengthen their character and morale, giving them the courage to face their life’s challenges.
To help raise funds, the staff will be selling Camp Yeka t-shirts at the Lag BaOmer parades this Sunday in Crown Heights, Los Angeles, Montreal and Toronto.
“Each t-shirt purchased provides 3 days worth of meals for a camper,” organizers said and urged the public to purchase more than one shirt.
“You will not only be donating to a very worthy cause, but will also be showing that you care and helping to spread awareness – giving others the chance to show they care,” they said.
It can also be puchased online at CampYeka.com
