Eliyahu Moscowitz, a 24-year-old Chabad bochur from Chicago, was murdered in a shooting on Monday, Simchas Torah evening, 5779.
Eliyahu was shot at about 10:20 p.m. Monday on the Loyola Park path near Lunt Avenue, Chicago police said.
Chicago police said a masked gunman appears to be targeting people in the city’s Roger’s Park neighborhood at random following the second fatal shooting in the neighborhood in two days.
Eliyahu was from a prominent Chabad family in Chicago. He served as a mashigach Kosher supervisor in Jewel-Osco, the major grocery store in Chicago.
Police released a surveillance picture showing the shooter dressed entirely in black, his face covered by a ski mask in an evident effort to keep his identity concealed.
His victims appear to have been chosen at random. No connection between the two men has been found. In both shootings, none of the victims’ belongings were taken.
“People will go about their daily lives. But we want it to be done in a safe way. A smart and vigilant way,” said Mayor Rahm Emanuel.
“This is a terrible loss for the Chicago community,” a friend told COLlive.
He is survived by his parents, Rabbi Mendel and Chanie Moscowitz of Chicago, IL, and grandparents Rabbi Efraim and Tzivia Moscowitz – Chicago, IL and Mrs. Miriam Nemanow (wife of R’ Moshe A’’H) – Crown Heights, NY as well as his siblings.
He was predeceased by his brother Levi Yitzchok Moscowitz OBM in 2015.

The murderer was covering his face so that means he was probably just out from prison and may be on parole. The police need to check all those living in the area and maybe in homeless shelters of suspects just out of prison. He obviously has a good reason to conceal his identity. It’s sad. It’s a breakdown of society. We must register to vote and vote in mass. We can’t change the laws unless we elect normal politicians. As for myself I will vote republican down the line and that’s one thing we can do to protect our communities. And of course we must daven that our votes succeed and put in the right candidates.

This young man was a sweet pleasant soul. I know from meeting him once the day my daughter married my son-in-law. He was my son-in-law’s shomer the day of their wedding. We kibbutzed before the Chasuna. So self-effacing, so humble and yet so firm in his convictions. Klal Yisroel has been robbed of a beautiful flower uprooted before it fully bloomed. I didn’t know him well, but there was something special about his smile and his pleasant manner. He radiated positivity and kindness. There was a real sweetness about him. I wish I knew him better or actually interacted with him. I would love to know more about what he was like. What a tremendous loss. May his neshama have an aliya and may Hashem comfort his parents.
