Visitors from around Israel are visiting the home of the late R’ Leibel and Itta Bistritzky obm in Jerusalem to comfort their children after her passing last week.
Mrs. Bistritzky was known for her kindness and open home, as she stood by her husband’s side as he ran a kosher store in the Lower East Side of Manhattan and later founded the Crown Heights chapter of Hatzalah, the volunteer Emergency Medical Service (EMS).
A refined woman who was careful in all the Mitzvos, she lived in Crown Heights for most of her life. In recent years, the couple moved to Jerusalem until his passing in 2013 and her passing this past Wednesday.
Among the people visiting the family were the Boyaner Rebbe, Rabbi Nachum Dov Brayer and Chief Military Rabbi of the Israel Defense Forces Rafi Peretz who is a family relative of the Bistritzkys.
On Tuesday, still in the Shiva mourning period, a great-granddaughter of Mrs. Bistritzky was born and named after her. The baby is the child of her grandson R’ Yisroel Bistritzky and his wife Chaya Mushka who live in Jerusalem.
“My wife and I were very connected with our grandmother,” he said. “We would visit her often. Just in the last month, we spent Shabbos with her. She always took an interest in us and our daughter. She would also call a lot and ask about our well being.”
The newborn was named Itta at the reading of the Torah during the Shachris davening held at the Shiva home on Tuesday, Rosh Chodesh Sivan.

To Yingy and the entire Choshuve Bistristsky Family
May you only know of Simcha and Arichas Yomim.
The lives of Leibel and Itta Bistritzky, obm, personify dedication to The Rebbe. They both came from some of the grandest of Yiddish worlds – from Germany and Russia, to Oklahoma and Manhatten- true Yiddish aristocracy- and became dedicated schluchim of The Rebbe. I suggest that all those that knew them should investigate who these precious and historical souls really were–you will be truly amazed and inspired.
