Over the past two years, Australia was hit by some of the most intense lockdowns in the world. Our seminary was also impacted. Relying heavily on a flow of overseas students to keep our dorm life afloat we had to shift gears and search inwards. With sheer determination and a spirit of Covid defiance our doors have remained open. The Rebbe always encouraged moisdos to put primary focus on cultivating local resources. Empowered by the Rebbes vision Merkos Women seminary did just that and discovered a vast array of treasures in our own backyard.
With the backing of an incredibly dedicated and supportive staff, Merkos was able to offer weekly themed programs and even a very successful summer retreat which attracted students from Victoria and interstate. Each day our students were treated to a rich variety of classes and daily trips to visit the great Australian outdoors.
During Covid the girls at Merkos together with the staff began a weekly publication called “the Merkos Connection”. The publication has produced just over 40 copies and is a collection of articles based on our class learning and research. Our dorm life has continued with farbrengens, shiurim and a place where girls can grow flourish and strengthen their connection to Yiddishkeit in a nonjudgemental and warm atmosphere. Now that Australia has reopened its doors we are beginning to welcome back our international students. The following testimonial is written by a student of over two years Mrs. Chaya Rosenbaum who came from overseas and has recently married.
“Merkos was and continues to be my home away from home. The dorm is permeated with such a loving and welcoming atmosphere, and the classes leave such a lasting and meaningful impact. The whole experience is the perfect combination to learning how to imbue your life with Torah and Mitzvos and to lead a Chassidishe lifestyle.
“All the teachers, are huge role models not only in terms of leading a Chassidishe life, but also in their knowledge and wisdom, making it extremely easy to feel inspired. Learning is irrespective of previous background knowledge, and is therefore universally accessible regardless of your prior understanding or what stream you come from; a big advantage! Apart from learning the program is holistic in teaching life skills that will provide immense growth in many areas.
“I’ve met some of the most incredible people in this program and have made some of the most amazing friends. I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone seeking a holistic, rich and authentic seminary experience!”

Not just a seminary more like a home that you can grow spiritually and deeply to the world of Tora with great team that support you throughout the year
Wow so exciting to hear they are opening up again! I was here for a year and a half and still feel connected, with the lifelong friends I made and the general sense of community that merkos is known for. The unique opportunity to learn and work half a day guided me in navigating the difficult balance of personal, religious and social responsibilities. At merkos you are met with a feeling that people really care about you and want your best. I loved the learning, Q&A’s, Tanya classes and I continue to draw inspiration from my time there
This place is such a great place to connect to chassidus and learn it’s such a special environment! The teachers are the best, the dorm is stunning and and shluchot and seminary management is absolutely amazing!
Merkos women was a complete game changer for me on my journey towards chassidus. I love their work!!
