The California Club Chabad of North Miami Beach, Florida, under the leadership of Rabbi Shloime and Feigie Halsband, welcomed a very special guest speaker this week.
David Schaecter, an Auschwitz survivor who now resides in Miami, gave a remarkable talk on his experiences as a young boy during the Holocaust.
The packed room was silent as they listened to Schaecter vividly recount his capture as an 11-year old boy in Slovaki. To the rapt crowd he relived his nightmare transport to Auschwitz, the struggle to remain alive, and his miraculous release and recovery.
Out of this darkness, Schaecter miraculously found a source of heroic inspiration and hope— “Rabbi Chune,” who davened and sang to Hashem throughout his captivity in the camp.
The evening ended with Schaecter recounting his visit to the Lubavitcher Rebbe. Saying that he had never before met such a “gentle human being, who looked at him with love and kindness,” Schaecter declared that the memory of that encounter is part of what makes him “tick.”
The audience was silent as a tearful Schaecter begged the crowd to never forget the one and half million children who were killed. His message was to never give up, educate the world, teach the children of tomorrow that the Yidden must always remain vigilant.
About 22 years ago, with the help of four other survivors and the son of a survivor, the idea of a holocaust memorial in South Florida was born. Joined by Norman Braman, a philanthropist and unwavering supporter of Jewish causes, the small but determined group enlisted the help of a talented architect to take their idea of a Holocaust Memorial on Miami Beach to a reality.
Since its completion, the Miami Beach Holocaust Memorial has received several million visitors, including thousands of middle school, high school and university students.

So many families are helped, emotionally, spiritually, financially, even though they do not have too much themselves. The tireless work that Feigie puts in every Shabbas and yom tov, cooking for hundreds of people. No one is ever turned away. Besides for Feigie running her Chabad house, she literally runs landau yeshiva primary as well. Good job guys. May you both go from strength to strength.
