The NYPD has made an arrest in the violent attack on a 63-year-old man in Crown Heights, COLlive has learned.
The incident took place in August when Rabbi Avraham Gopin was attacked by a man who threw a large brick at him as he exercised in Lincoln Terrace Park.
The suspect was located by the NYPD Hate Crimes Unit, District Attorney Eric Gonzalez has informed Chanina Sperlin of the CHJCC.
He was then picked up by detectives from the 77th Precinct.
Oniel Gilbourne, 26, faces assault as a hate crime and criminal possession of a weapon charges.
The suspect is currently hospitalized.
Thanks for catching this guy. Crown Heights is a safer place with people like this behind bars
If this is indeed the criminal he deserves time in jail. Kudos to the NYPD.
In jail? Of course! you mean in jail for life, yes that too
Perhaps hospitalized in a mental hospital
i really hope he got a good beating
Lock him up and throw away the key.
The first thing the police do in all of these cases is to take the suspect for a psych eval. Then they determine it isn’t a hate crime and that the suspect is just mentally ill. Then they release back to the streets. The police are accomplices in Antisemitic violence.
I am glad we have direct communication between the DA and our community’s leader, can we pressure the DA to now actually charge the guy with attempted murder? the jury will take his side anyway since itll be made up of HIS “peers”
Don’t know why the criminal is in the hospital but sounds good to me.. however I’d like to hear that he actually gets hard prison time. That’s always an open question around here.
Yesterday on Fox news a white man gets 11 years in prison for burning a cross in black people’s backyard. The criminal in the crown heights ‘incident’ actually violently assaulted and injured a human being in an animalistic hate crime. Therefore he should get a far more serious sentence. I’m interested to see if that will happen.
They should charge him with murder since that is the expected result when you bash someones face with a brick at full force
In the hospital…..
He will claim insanity and get a free card. How sad.
because even if he is mentally unstable, he specifically chose a Jew from all the other folks in the park-
either way he can not be around others
I’m sure he’ll ‘enjoy’ that even more 🙂
Did he live in a shelter or a supportive housing facility for the mentally ill ?
Did he live in public housing or rent stabilized housing ? His family should lose their public housing benefits. Being mentally ill doesn’t mean that you are mentally insane. If he knew what he was doing, and who he was doing it against – its criminal. Trump said to build more mental institutions, not simply unsupervised housing for the mentally ill and homeless – which is what is going on now in NYC.
I know a lady who is mentally ill, and on medicine. She says
that mental illness does not exonerate someone who commits murder.
“I am mentally ill. Yet, no matter how ill I am, I would never want
to kill someone.”
