Amichai Shimon Rubin, a Corporal in the 51st Battalion of the Golani Brigade in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), passed away from his wounds on Tuesday, 25 Tishrei, 5784.
The 23-year-old is the son of Rabbi Yishai Rubin, founder of the Torah community in Acre (Akko), and grandson of Rabbi Yehuda Rubin OBM, Shliach of Alon Moreh and the Shomron area.
Amichai Rubin was stationed in Israel’s south on Simchas Torah when Hamas terrorists invaded the border and conducted the largest massacre of Jews in a single day since the Holocaust.
According to a friend, Rubin and his colleagues were told to gather in the dining room on the army base when the sirens went off. That allowed the terrorists to try to kill them all by throwing hand grenades into the room.
Rubin showed resourcefulness and resolve when he positioned himself by an exit door and led a 2 hour battle, holding off the terrorists from entering and killing more.
During that battle, his platoon leader was killed on the spot and Rubin was hit in the head by 2 bullets. “He continued fighting despite that until shrapnel from a grenade hit his chest and he fell,” the friend said.
“By fighting, Amichai fended off the terrorists and saved all the base soldiers who were in the dining room,” the friend wrote.
Rubin was taken to the hospital with severe wounds. He was pronounced dead by the IDF on Tuesday.
Family and friends mourned him among the 1,200 people who were brutally murdered by Hamas during the current war against Israel.
