An ‘achdus’ agreement has reportedly been reached between the rabbinical leaders of the Jewish communities of Russia and Kazakhstan following months of discussions.
Last year, in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, Russia’s Chief Rabbi Berel Lazar has called on his colleagues to reconcile with those they have a disagreement with.
During an hours-long Zoom call, Rabbi Lazar promised to achieve achdus with his neighbor, Rabbi Yeshaya Cohen, Chief Rabbi of Kazakhstan and Chairman of Euro-Asian Rabbinical Conference.
Rabbi Lazar serves as Head Shliach of Russia and leader of the Federation of Jewish Communities of the CIS (FJC) which oversees Jewish activities in the Former Soviet Union. Rabbi Cohen has not been a recognized Chabad Shliach since a feud with Rabbi Lazar.
Under their agreement, Rabbi Cohen will accept the authority of Rabbi Lazar, while Rabbi Cohen will be reinstated as the Head Shliach of Kazakhstan and the director of its Chabad institutions.
Rabbi Lazar also committed to supporting the development and expansion of the shuls, Chabad centers and educational institutions in Kazakhstan.
