A Message to the Talmidim Hashluchim (And Their Parents)

Op-ed by Rabbi Gershon Avtzon, Rosh Yeshivas Lubavitch Cincinnati: It is always during the summer that the “Talmidei Hashluchim List” is released and another group of enthusiastic and idealistic Talmidim will be sent to various Yeshivos all over the world on a very unique shlichus of the Rebbe: “Talmidim Hashluchim.” Here's what they, the Hanhallah and their parents should know. a yeshiva that allows the shluchim to have smartphones, while the bochrim dont, is cutting a hole in their own ship.

You mean like every Yeshiva in chutz Laaretz?

What?

What do you mean? They have different roles!

They’re not students in the yeshiva. They do a lot of work and in some yeshivas are even running many aspects of it.
You can ask them not to use their phone too much in zal or in front of the bochurim, but to straight up ban them isn’t going to help anyone.

If your scared of the mixed messages from a shliach having a smart phone you should probably get rid of yours for the same reason

You don’t have to reject technology, rather learn how to use it for the right purpose, which is a process…

I couldn’t agree more as a bochur I went on shlichus and only realized after that we were still bochrim. Still learning still trying to grow and the yeshivah (not pointing any fingers) didn’t really provide that for us. They offered a shuir once a week and we were left for a year without direction. Remember shluchim are still Bochrim just a bit older.

Very nice article

Two points, if a bochur is struggling in ruchniyus, I don’t see how the parents being in touch would help anyone. Maybe calling in regards to physical things to see how their son is being treated would be nice, but I think shluchim are figuring out their own lives fine at that point, without needing the parents calling yeshiva to see how their they’re faring. Regarding the idea that there should be a “guideline for their phone and internet usage” I personally disagree. I think you can have job requirements and criteria for the people you are hiring (to put… Read more »

Shluchim should not be fundraisers?!
July 6, 2023 3:34 pm

I agree – but that should start at the bottom. Tzivos Hashem has young “chayolim” fundraising. Yeshivas encourage competetive fundraising among young talmidim ie, the class that brings in the most wins a pizza lunch. I’ve received numerous calls from teens fundraising for some Raise-Thon, Charidy, etc on behalf of their schools. Seminaries – for their Ukraine 24 Teves trip, and bochurim for their Chanuka mivtzoim. And the list goes on… By the time these young men become talmidei hashluchim – they are pros at fundraising and the schools are only too happy to take advantage of the opportunity.
