For the 33 years of its existence, Bris Avrohom, headquartered in Hillside, NJ, has been the closest Chabad center (1.5 miles) to Newark Liberty International Airport.
For many years, they tried to establish a presence at the airport, to light a menorah there on Chanukah and to assist Jewish travelers at El Al and other airlines.
This Chanukah, for the first time ever, with the assistance of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, a menorah was lit at Newark Airport today.
To accomplish this, Rabbi Mordechai Kanelsky, of Bris Avrohom, established a relationship with several individuals at the Port Authority and met with them at their headquarters in New York City.
Eventually, the Port Authority agreed to a meeting at Terminal B, for international arrivals, near the El Al counters at Newark Liberty.
Together, the Port Authority and Bris Avrohom found a location for the impressive 12 foot menorah and, today, history was made as the menorah was lit surrounded by members of the Port Authority, the General Manager of Newark Liberty International Airport, the General Manager of El Al, as well as El Al crew members and stewardesses, and the rabbis and volunteers of Bris Avrohom.
Rabbi Kanelsky explained the importance of lighting a menorah in a public place and gave thanks to the management of the Port Authority, Newark Airport and El Al airlines, for helping to make this event happen. The menorah itself was sponsored by Simon and Lina Garber, who flew in all of their family members, from around the country, to be at the airport for this historic event.
Bris Avrohom rabbis and volunteers remained at the location to put tefillin on travelers and guests, hand out brochures about Chanukah and other Judaic necessities, and distribute sufganiyot, traditional Chanukah donuts, free of charge.
Bris Avrohom will continue to be at Terminal B Arrivals throughout the week of Chanukah.
