Chaos ensued in the main shul of 770 Eastern Parkway in Crown Heights on Monday afternoon, disrupting the davening and learning that take place there around the clock.
The trigger: A cement truck.
The truck showed up on Union Street behind Lubavitch World Headquarters with the apparent assignment to fill up an underground tunnel that ran from the main shul to the now-closed Mikvah building next door.
Bochurim, mostly from Israel and wearing ‘Meshichist’ yarmulkas and pins, responded with fury. They have been reportedly behind the digging of the tunnel, claiming it was to expand 770 visited by residents and visitors on a daily basis.
They proceeded to tear down the iconic wooden panels that wrapped the walls of the main shul. They then tore down wooden beams and used what appeared to be a hammer to break the shul’s brick wall.
The result is a very visible opening from the main shul to the tunnel. Officers of the NYPD were seen entering 770 to survey the developments but have not made arrests.
The main shul of 770 has long been the subject of a legal dispute between Agudas Chassidei Chabad / Merkos L’inyonei Chinuch and Cong. Lubavitch Inc. over who is the rightful owner of the 770-788 Eastern Parkway complex. Bochurim have long had free reign in the main shul, even violently barring some from entering.
Update: The Shul was closed after the Gaboim and Merkos both agreed to ask the NYPD to shut the Shul due to the immediate danger.

It’s a shame how ppl have no clue that there are many yeshivas that come in for kvutzah, not only tzfas, and that in a big majority of cases, the ones causing all this garbage is NOT tzfatim but other more extreme yeshivas (be’er Sheva, rishon litziyon etc.) that are not affiliated with tzfas whatsoever!

We are on the cusps of Moshiach. The Yetzer Harah is trying with all his might to cause machlokes. There are challenges, and big mistakes were made, but let’s try to find ways to bring each other closer together, win the war on Galus, and bring Moshiach. I DONT BLAME THESE kids for their behavior, I blame the people & institutions that raised them namely the yeshiva of tzfas. It’s time the yeshiva and its staff should be condemned by the RABONIM of the broader Lubavitcher community.

Why were these thugs not stopped? I watched in disbelief how they were allowed to desecrate the shul. This is a very sad spectacle.
First of all they’re tzfatim, not meshechistim. There’s a big difference. Col needs to get it right. Also the tzfatim have to be dealt with once and for all This is a huge chillul Lubavitch, and chillul Hashem, this has spread all over, it’s a disgrace to Lubavitch. Our focus is completely on the wrong thing. Even though we prosecute a terrorist, we know the problem is the people that train them.

Let’s not blame the kids and take responsibility once and for all. All these years, nothing has been happening with the Rebbe’s request to expand.

Just like we demanded Justice on behalf of the Rebbe’s shul, let’s now demand Justice when it comes to rebuilding or renovating the shul.

It’s not ideal, but better than nothing.
They are not the people who have the right to “expand” it, that would be the property owner(s). Are their names on the deed?
The Rebbe said the Beis Din would be who would make decisions. Given the Beis Din’s response to the activity it’s clear they did not make this decision.
If the property owners and the Beis Din had made the decision it was time to expand 770, licensed professionals would have been engaged and proper plans drawn up and permitted. None of that happened, just vildeh chayehs destroying with no respect.
The demolition activities made the vaibershul literally a danger to life. Tell me, where in Torah is it allowed, much less a mitzvah, to endanger the lives of other Jews?
This was not about anything positive, it was pure childish ego.

They weren’t THINKING anything, just having their idea of fun by violently attacking the Rebbe’s shul.
Some of you wrote that the tunnels could have chas v’sholom caused great tragedy to the woman’s section.
I hate to say it, but the blame doesn’t only go to the bochrim.
First and foremost, the heads of the shul are more responsible, as they were the ones that could have made sure the tunnels never happened by doing what the Rebbe said.
More then the bochrim, the heads would have been held accountable for any tragedy

It seems to me that years ago these guys decided that the Ohel belonged to the ‘establishment’ if you will, so did the upstairs and the Rebbes office. So all they could do is seize 770 itself and make it their makom kadosh. But they are a small minority holding the majority hostage.
