Last Shabbos, IDF lone soldier veterans who reside across America and across the sea came together for a weekend shabbaton of uplift and unity.
On its 3rd anniversary of Nevut’s Winter shabbaton in upstate New York, 55 lone soldiers came in for the occasion from California, the Tri-state area, and even Israel.
The men and women experienced the unique relatability that comes with the reunion of what only a group of fellow lone soldiers who have stepped off a battlefield and into the grind of daily life with little to no transitional relief can attest to.
Replete with a Shabbat experience, skiing, hiking, BBQ and bonfire and other adventures, Nevut’s annual shabbaton is just one of the many programs – including those that aid in career advancement, wellbeing, a sense of community, and a spiritual outlet of inspiration – that bring these soldiers together for a one-of-a-kind atmosphere that eases the transition to a productive and fulfilling life post-army.
The warmth was felt from the get-go with everyone helping one another in Shabbos preparation, to a Friday night kicked off with hearty song and dance late into the night.
Shabbos day brought in new friendships and rekindled old bonds. Energetic singing throughout the day finished off with a lively havdalah in an ambiance of harmony and enthusiasm.
Motzei Shabbos wrapped up with a toasty bonfire, a savory BBQ Melava Malka, and music.
Sunday morning brought the soldiers up Hunter mountain for a full day of exhilaration with skiing and snowboarding.
Lone soldier veteran Sarah G. fondly reflects: “I couldn’t have felt more at home this Shabbat. These people are here to support me no matter what… It’s another family.”

Go Ari and Rochel Shira!!!!!
They have done more for the safety of the Jewish people than most: Leaving their homes to serve in the army in another country, putting their lives in danger every day, to protect people that they don’t even know, who are not even the same nationality as them, often. God bless them.
