An earthquake was felt in major cities on the East Coast of the United States on Tuesday afternoon, including New York, Washington DC, Philadelphia and Cleveland.
Officials said it was a 5.9 magnitude earthquake and based in Virginia.
A mild shake and tremble could be felt shortly before 2 p.m. in Brooklyn’s Crown Heights, but life seems to continue as usual with mothers wheeling their babies without concern and construction workers drilling on Kingston Avenue.
Cell phone service has been disrupted in New York City.
Several buildings in New York City were evacuated, with employees seen standing on Eastern Parkway.
Graphic designer and Jewish music promoter Sruly Meyer was in his basement office in Crown Heights when the quake hit.
“I felt my chair moving and I thought the chair was breaking. I stood up but still felt floor shaking,” he told VIN News.
“I looked at fish tank and saw water shaking and realized that something was very wrong. I started to worry that my basement was caving in, so I took my kids outside and saw other people coming out and asking ‘you felt it?’.”
The Pentagon has been evacuated, CNN’s Barbara Starr reports.
And even in Toronto, tweets said that the shaking could be felt for minutes.
MSNBC reports that the quake has caused flight delays at a number of airports, including JFK, Newark, Washington National, Washington Dulles and Philadelphia.

REALITY CHECK: Sorry that you East-Coasters had such a fright. If you were sincerely frightened by the 5.9 quake (5.9!!), please, PLEASE don’t come to California. I mean, I’d love to have you, but… we get REAL earthquakes here. So stay away.

There was no earthquake in Toronto
I felt the whole house shake but not one object moved not even a bit…..other apartments and houses in CH stuff broke and moved al around!!!!!

I was on a NY city bus for the first time and I felt it from the time I got on until I got off, about a half hour. The ride went smooth for about 30 secs…maybe when the EQ hit? But never again if I can avoid it!

Network shut down and I had to re-boot. Now that makes sense. I was having a coffee at TIM HORTON’s on the NY 90 Thruway at Scottsdale, when this happened. As I was drying my hands on the hot blower, I remember feeling the hot air of the dryer blowing out in a slightly different direction. Weird.
