When the pandemic hit, the thought of the big events that we are all accustomed to suddenly vanished. Instead of the lavish affairs, communities got together and imbued celebrants with warmth, joy and camaraderie making each of their Big Days extremely special. In our neighborhood we saw this in the many “drive by Simchas” that we all joyously shared, even with neighbors that we had never met.
With the Achdus spirit that we have all become accustomed to it was a no-brainer that 4 mothers of Lubavitcher Yeshiva students joined together to create a communal Bar Mitzvah celebration for their dear sons.
The Bar Mitzvah took place on July 29th at Brooklyn’s Machon Chana event space on Crown Street, which was a fantastic space for this event. The mothers prepared a festive BBQ-style feast. The boys were just happy to be together and appreciated the sheer power of people coming to celebrate with them. It was especially touching when the Maamer Niggun was sung. The maamer was split between the boys, with each boy studying and delivering another section of this fundamental discourse.
For entertainment, Shimon Tevel Music brought an unmatched musical Simcha, from the ambiance to the popular tracks and signature niggunim that packed the dance floor. Another major highlight was hiring Shimon Caplan from www.bigday.events, a local Crown Heights Photobooth and event resource company. They provided a print-and-go Photo booth set up, where the guests took pictures in front of a themed backdrop and received instant printouts, providing guests with memorable party favors.
While all types of Simchas are amazing, there was something truly special about the communal Achdus that resulted from this pandemic and the circumstances. While we all cannot wait for life to go back to normal, there are certain elements that I am sure many may bring with them in the future, and one is the simple joy of our special celebrations.
