Despite the difficult security situation — or perhaps precisely because of it — a central and moving Chanukah candle-lighting ceremony took place last night at Opera Square in Frankfurt, attended by approximately 2,000 people.
The event was attended by government ministers, local officials, rabbis, and community leaders. The Chanukah candles were lit by the Av Beit Din, Rabbi Yosef Yechamiel Avelin.
The event was organized on a grand scale by the local Chabad Shliach, Rabbi Moshe Mendelson, together with the head Shliach, Rabbi Shneur Zalman Gurevitch.
The program included speeches, a prayer in memory of the victims of the Sydney terror attack, and a special prayer for the complete recovery of the wounded. Following the candle lighting, there were dancing, celebrations, and gifts distributed to children, creating a warm and unifying atmosphere that reflected the spirit of light and hope of the Chanukah holiday.
