Five Israelis contracted typhoid fever after visiting the Chabad Center in Nepal, the Israeli media is reporting.
The youths, who are being treated at Sheba Hospital in Tel Hashomer, considered the possibility that they became ill at the Beit Chabad in Kathmandu, where they had recently been dining.
Health officials said it was possible that the disease was transferred to their food by one of the local employees.
All five are suffering from fever and are being treated with antibiotics.
Rabbi Chezki Lifshitz, Shliach in Nepal, strongly refuted the media’s claims that the disease was contracted at the Chabad Center.
“We are surprised by the headlines claiming the Israelis who returned with typhoid became ill in the Chabad house. This claim has no basis,” said Lifshitz.
“Thousands of people ate in the Kathmandu Chabad house recently, and if the illness was there, hundreds more would have been affected.”
Lifshitz also said that the standards of cleanliness in the Chabad house are way over that of any restaurant in Nepal.
