As thousands of visitors stream to New York for Gimmel Tammuz, many are passing through Chabad of Midtown Manhattan for special events and programs all weekend.
The observances began with a farbrengen at The Midtown Kollel on Thursday afternoon attended by local residents and businesspeople. Guest lecturer was Rabbi Binyomin Bitton, shliach to downtown Vancouver.
On Thursday evening, Chabad was bustling with Brazilians attending two separate simultaneous events. Rabbi Yossi Schildkraut and his family of shluchim hosted a group of 100 Sao Paulo natives in the new 4th floor social hall while Rabbi and Mrs. Yehoshua Goldman hosted the 80-strong Rio Di Janeiro contingent in the 2nd floor sanctuary.
Brazilian warmth infused the New York institution – located just steps from 46th Street, a byway also known as “Little Brazil”. Both contingents were welcomed by Rabbi Yehoshua and Brocha Chana Metzger, shluchim to Midtown. What was most striking was that many of those in attendance had never met the Rebbe, yet they chose to travel over the continental divide to join others in song, prayer and solidarity.
Many more international visitors are expected at this weekend at Chabad of Midtown’s communal Shabbos meals and Sunday services.
Twenty one years later the Rebbe’s message rings strong– in Manhattan, in Brazil, upstairs, downstairs, and all over the world.
