Weberman Sentenced For Life
Brooklyn frum counselor Nechemya Weberman, 54, was sentenced to 103 years in prison for abusing a young girl. By COLlive reporter
Kings County District Attorney Charles Hynes Tuesday announced the sentencing of Nechemya Weberman to 103 years in prison for abusing a young girl over the course of 3 years.
Weberman, a Satmar chossid who counseled troubled youth, was convicted on the top count of Course of ... Conduct Against a Child in the First Degree on December 10, 2012 before Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice John Ingram.
"If there is one message to take away from this case it is that this office will pursue the evil of... abuse of a child no matter where it occurs in this county," Hynes said in a statement.
"The abuse of a child cannot be swept under the rug or dealt with by insular groups believing only they know what is best for their community.
"In this case it took the courage of a young woman to drive home the point that justice can only be achieved through the involvement of civil authorities charged with protecting all the people."
Weberman, 54, was counseling the victim beginning when she was 12. From 2007 to 2010, Weberman abused the girl multiple times, mostly in his office, according to the statement.

but what we shouold all be petrified of is also the sentencing itself
this is the same system that allows murderers to get a few measly years and others sentences for their life
many times based on what point they are trying to prove or which stand they are trying to take
the sentence is excessive for the court of law
and in any case jail time is not the way Torah set out to take care of things
either the ability of individuals in the court systems to put people away for life with a few short words should be very scary to all of us and shameful for them
every sentencing judge should be required to sit in jail for a year so they can think twice before they sentence others
To the young lady involved...we each wish you and this jerk's other victims a full complete and speedy recovery from these horrible incidents. (Sorry, I don't know what word to use.) You've shown that you have the strength, remember that when things get rough.
I am disheartened by the state of justice in this country. If the alleged acts occurred, that's horrible and justice should be served, but 103 years is beyond excessive. I can't recall a murder who ever had such a long sentence.

There is much written about imprisonment, which has no place in 'Torah' and is a cruel system.

Honestly, I think it is more of a chilul Hashem to defend this guy. It makes you sound like we think that as Jews we are above the law and can to whatever we want, be it tax evasion or something worse. Crying antisemitism at every court ruling you don't like decreases your credibility and respectability.

What would the victims feel like if their pain... was only worth 10 years for him, when he hurt them- in a way that they will be in pain all their lives..

As to the sentence - assuming he is guilty as charged, who among us is to judge what constitues "just" punishment for such crimes? What does or would the victim say? Were there more that were afraid to speak?
To say certain things.
It may sound stupid, but thats the way it is.
Some people feel even that they did something wrong by being abused, so they dont want to say it.
And im not just saying, i know people who unfortunately lived this.
Its easy to say things, try to put yourself in her shoes.

Just on aside: Charles Hynes is cleansing his name with this conviction, he was getting too much flack and this guy happened to be the "lucky" one. He is being used - as an example. Hynes is not even denying that ..he says so in his statement.

But, correct me if I'm missing something. Doesn't the Torah require the rapist to just pay a fine and even marry her? So, when the law of the land and the Torah contradict, which one do we go by?

Off hand, it does seem like the Torah is kind of "lenient" with this type of crime, if interpreted literally. So, let's hear how the Beis Din would actually deal with this, and what the other sources of Jewish law have to say. I do find it hard to believe that the literal interpretation would allow us to just give the rapist no more than just a slap on the hand.
