Construction on the Union Street Mikvah in Crown Heights – the Rebbe’s Mikvah – is set to begin in the coming weeks, COLlive.com was told.
The committee who has been working tirelessly to see this happen, say that restoring the Mikvah will be “an appropriate birthday present for the Rebbe.”
The committee members include Nechama Hackner, Sheina Levin, Rochel Chitrik and Detty Leverton.
After years of use, the Mikvah, located on the corner of Union Street and Albany Avenue, is now in need of repair, and must be expanded to service the growing community.
Phase one of the renovation project is planned for building an all new entrance and rooms and restoring the Mikvah that the Rebbe used.
Plans have been drawn up for the project, which will cost an estimated $2 million.
A luxurious Kallah room is planned, in memory of Chana Raskin Wolvovsky OBM, with funds collected by her friends.
The renovations are being done under the advisement of veteran Mikvah expert Rabbi Gershon Grossbaum of Minnesota and Rabbi Levi Garelik of Crown Heights.
Mrs. Rosalyn Malamud, Director of the Mikvah for the past 25 years, said: “The Rebbe was personally involved in every phase of the building of the Mikvah – and considered it of the utmost importance that it was built.”
Malamud told COLlive the Rebbe once sold 770 Eastern Parkway through a local realtor to raise the funds to build the Mikvah the first time it was built.
“The Rebbe was very disappointed that money was not being raised fast enough, so he sold 770 to show how critical and vital the project was to him personally,” she says.
Dedication opportunities are available, including the Mikvah, entrance, or preparation rooms. For more information contact Detty Leverton at 718-953-9311.

The holy Mikvah has not been renovated for years. Now we are going to do it, and some mediocre CH residents write here that It’s ok, it’s fine to live in an unpleasant house, neighborhood car etc.
Yeah! Go mediocrity!
ko hacovod .. keep up the great work mrs malamud
People – why so much negativity?? A good thing is being done – let’s be positive. Please.
The article says something about new rooms. From what I hear they are planning a whole new wing. This would certainly help speed things up – a good thing.
What a beautiful thing.
no matteer how strongly you think about this maybe you shouldt yuse such harsh language!!!!!!!!!!!!
is this the 5th or 6th time we hear about renovations? there is no excuse for the way the mikvah looks. $2 million? c’mon that is definitely exaggerated. they are only renovating. how much can that cost? maybe they are hiring a ‘fancy’ interior decorator on our chesbon?
Nothing like a little competition to get the ball rolling 😉
everyone should participate monetarily as much as they are able to, but let’s be realistic; this project, like most renovation projects,is unavoidably far more costly than many imagine.everyone is working on this l’shem mitzvah, not for personal gain.please be as generous as possible with your contributions.
I have been to the Crown heights mikvah and once actually saw a cockroach as I was about to dip! Nevermind all the hair that is always floating around the top of the water! And yes, there are some who prevent themselves from going to mikvah through certain means due to the uncleanliness of this mikvah and not being able to go to any other! Why is it that (until now maybe?) Crown Heights, which serves more people than any other community has the most outdated and unclean mikvah, compared to every little town with a state of the art… Read more »

Can someone explain? Sold 770?
u may be right about #1, but the way she worded it, did not make it easy to come to any other conclusion.
how can we give a donation? I dont live in crown heights but would like to contribute/
If every woman who uses the mikvah lives a small donation ($10-50) for the construction, the’ll be able to raise some nice cash during the next year or so.
please explain yourself very clearly because it sounds terrible what you wrote… and if it is what it sound like… you should pack your bags and get the… out of CH!! respectfully.
I believe #1 meant the people who stopped using THIS Mikvah and instead went to say Brooklyn Heights etc. Not that they stopped going altogether. People please stop getting so dramatic and use your heads to understand what the commenter meant.
To # 1 Y ou mean to say that there are peaple who do no keep Tahras Hamishpacha
Whats with crown heights
poor excuse. there are plenty of other mikvaos around should someone truly wish to go- and were not comf. here. the purity of your family should be worth a little more than some minor discomfort. don’t let the yetzer Hara get you on that one- please…
whats the story that the rebbe sold 770???
Where do you come from?? The mikvah experience is extremely unpleasant, to put it mildly. I, for one, am so thankful to see that a committee is making the Union Mikvah more beautiful and pleasant for all. Why do all Chabad Houses have beautiful mikvahs and here in the headquarters of Chabad we have something old and ugly?!
Thank you for everyone who have been taking care of the Mikvah all these years. Yes, like every house that gets well used, after years of heavy usage, the Mikvah could use renovations. Utmost gratitude is due to the dedicated women who have undertaken to make this happen. I have thought about it many times over the years, about how we really should get involved in updating our Mikvah, just like we update our houses, but I did not actually do anything about it. So, thank you very much to those women who have undertaken to make it happen –… Read more »
to comment #1- people who stopped going to mikvah!
what do you mean by that comment. Have some pity on the future of your holy children. Going to the mikvah brings brochos and healthy children. WOMAN AND MEN: GET EDUCATED ON THIS IMPORTANT MITzVAH THAT THE FRIERDIKER REBBE WENT ON MESIRAS NEFESH FOR- TO BUILD MIKVAHS.
ok, so its not a five star hotel here, but its manageable.
Your not living there, just visiting for a good thing.
thank you very much for ur hard work. it is much appreciated!
It’s clean and pleasant there. Renovations are nice, but I wouldn’t call the current state “shambles.” Unless you’ve found a toad in the mikvah or mud in the showers, please don’t use exaggerated terms.
If every family in Crown heights would give a donation starting from $18 and up, however much you can afford, the renovation will be finished in no time.
Everyone open up your wallets or write out a check NOW!
mazal tov !!! its about time 🙂
Great! I’m sure alot of people who have stopped going to mikvah because of the shambles that this mikvah is in, will once again go.
