Laborers were seen Friday morning reinstalling a disputed small plaque on Lubavitch World Headquarters in Brooklyn, NY.
Early this morning, four non-Jewish men affixed the plaque commemorating the Lubavitcher Rebbe’s laying of the building’s cornerstone.
A COLlive reader reported that many who arrived early for Shacharis prayers stopped by to look at the new installment that in the past instigated a heated court case over the ownership of 770.
Gabbai Zalman Lipsker refused to speak to COLlive Friday morning, but a source said it was the Gabboim of the 770 Shul (Congregation Lubavitch Inc.) who commissioned the work.
When it was first put up in 1995, the plaque referred to the Rebbe in Hebrew as “of blessed memory.” It was defaced almost immediately and the phrase was scratched out by, it was widely presumed, Messianists, who oppose any suggestion that the Rebbe passed away.
The defaced plaque remained up until Nov. 4, 2004, when some Israeli bochurim, including three named defendants in the court case, removed it in the middle of the night and tried to replace it with a plaque that referred to the Rebbe as the Moshiach.
They were caught in the act and arrested, and their new plaque was removed under police guard.
The conflict escalated: Agudas Chassidei Chabad and Merkos L’Iyonei Chinuch, reconized as the Chabad establishment, hired installers to replace the original, non-messianist plaque. They were met by groups who pushed and shoved them, and ultimately the police got involved and Merkos obtained a temporary restraining order against the three young men.
Then Congregation Lubavitch Inc. tried to have the restraining order voided on the grounds that its gabbais were the only ones who should control the plaque, the synagogue and the surrounding buildings.
The restraining order stood, barricades went up, guards were posted and Merkos’ plaque was finally affixed — only to be vandalized by a blowtorch.
There was no answer at the Merkos offices this morning.

i heard these same excact arguments or discussions, yesterday the day before, and for the past 10 years. lets switch it up a little!
There are certain acronyms that have always been added to the names of all the chabad rabbeim after their histalkus. These were added as a way of showing deep respect. We should add ziya etc. after the Rebbe’s name to show at least the same level of respect. Belief that the Rebbe will lead us out of golus as the moshiach should not change that. The only reason not to add ziya etc. after the Rebbe’s name is if gimmel Tamuz never happened.
I think its perfect the way it is now
TO #39 YOU MEAN THE REBBEH?
hhhmmm ..and here I was thinking that it was bad mortgages that caused the recession and the election of Obama that caused a change in US policies in Israel. If only I had your clairvoyant capabilities then I would tell everyone here exactly why the holocaust happened just like the people like you blamed the gaza pullout for katrina (of the tsunami…whatever the natural disaster it was…) I don’t get you. You need to get out of your bubble….k I’m not gonna waste any more time on you…. Removing the stone and recent issues on elections and rabbonim started the… Read more »
though i have learnt enough sichos nun alef nun beis to know the rebbeh is THE goel acharon vechulu! and WE are infact THE “DOR RISHON” etc
i’m sure that above all the rebbeh valued achdus and likes the stone this way!!
hey i was going to become chabad now im not its so SHITCHY
This is the true story in short: On 17 elul 5748 after mincha, david chase approached the Rebbe (who at the time was davenning in the pres. st. house) and asked that the Rebbe come to a ground breaking for a new building. The Rebbe agreed, and around 5 PM the Rebbe came to 770. The video is out there for everyone to see. In the end, nothing was built, other than some bathrooms in the basement. At one point, the Rebbe said something to the effect of “Men shlept an alta yid tzu machen a even hapina un gornit… Read more »
I have never heard some thing more stupid in my life
To #26 IS the stone real? : How dare you mock this stone? How dare you mock our Holy Kehilla? You think elections and Rabbonim are a joke? You think the whole issue of Shilta is silly? YOU are a mockery! YOU are the joke! As YOU conclude, YOU are not real! These are unresolved issues that effect our Kehilla, and whatever effects our Kehilla also effects Klal Yisroel b’ gashmiyus u’b’ruchniyus. Removing the stone and recent issues on elections and rabbonim started the recession, caused havoc in U.S. support for Israel, brought the allegations against Iowa and NJ. We… Read more »
after gimmul tammuz the CH comuty lost all there right whether it be in Vaad hakol or in kapors or where or how they davven so just add this on to the list of what a few poeple can do to destroy the rebbi legcy
they will do it just like they did it to all the great leaders of all time
just stay strong and soon the few evil doors will fail
Only Merkos & Aguch have the rights to put up the stone not the gabboim!!!!
Please also email [email protected]
can you please write a summary of this on here, i also have never heard of that building that was never built, and would like to learn more about it, but am not comfortable providing an email address publicly, online.
thanks.
It’s 21 years since the “establishment” asked the rebbe to participate in this groundbreaking ceremony. Did any of you ever see the video of the groundbreaking? Does anyone really think that the “establishment” will ever put up this building?? But have no fear, the Rebbe will ultimately prevail. So dear members of the
so-called “establishment”, better wake up before it’s too late.
If you think that the “establishment” gave in, THINK AGAIN.
Don’t you notice how “THE CORNER STONE” is NOT centered. It leaves plenty of space to write zia when the time (chas ve Shalom) comes.
The terrorists, are disturbed people, so lets not be to mean, but the “establishment” is acting like little kids!
This whole thing makes me SO SO SO EMBARRASSED.
Why don’t big holy rabbis, grow up?!
if you look in the second picture, you can see the space above the “even hapina” doesn’t say yechi. can everyone please get along? it hurts to see lubavitchers fighting like this… moshiach now!!
The stone really isn’t that important, maybe we should each focus on our own avodah and our own ahavas yisroel, and fulfilling the rebbe’s directions to become closer to Hashem, maybe the stone should not have any place in our lives at all.
If only we made as much fuss about taking care of each other and respecting each other as we make a fuss over a Even Doimem.
Is there any way to prove that this is THE real stone and not an imposter? Maybe this stone is only made to look like the real stone, just to confuse and mislead everyone? Maybe the real stone is hidden and will one day be revealed? Maybe only certain people (from Tzfas) are able to see the real stone? Maybe we should have a vote to decide if this is the real stone or not? Maybe if this stone is elected to be the real stone, it will be sued in court as an imposter? Maybe Rabbonim should pasken that… Read more »
this is 14, the one who wanted clarification. I really only want that and nothing else, (I will not respond to any online funny stuff) so if youre serious my email is [email protected]
looking forward to hearing from you.
“Bobby” (not real name)
what is this tone from? what’s the story behind it
It should say kvod Kdushas admur not Shlita not Ziya and that’s what all publications should have said since Gimel tamuz this way you’re not destroying the Meshichstims belief or being disrespectfull to the antis
the fact that not one person who wrote a comment does not care about who puts it up or what it says shows how far you gone
you all need mad help
foon chaslavitch kein lubavitch
dream on
what real building project?
if that thing says yechi ill rip that plaque myself
pepole are sick and dieing, and not very plasent things are happening in lubavitch around the world, some pepole are realy suffering, so way way put emphasis on somthing that does not bring shaolom around us,its defenetly not what the rebbe intended.
I’ll gladely discuss this with you. Please provide an e-mail address so we can communicate.
Didn’t anyone notice the two pieces of tape? Just wait ’till they take that off to reveal Yechi below.
to number 5 and 12 can you please explain? I’ve never heard of this… there was a building that never happened? What was this stone supposed to be the cornerstone of?
This is not sarcastic I really mean it, I’ve never heard of this and would like to understand.
We definitely needed some more action in C.H. Its bin quite lately.
I think it should be put back in the garden until the real building project happens
BH, terrorism has won out, and the Rebbe’s name was erased…
The stone actually says merkos lost again
what diffrence does makes a stone there?
come on!
SO NOW WE GIVE IN TO TERRORISM???????!!!!!!!
I DONT AGREE WITH EITHER EXTREMES BUT THIS SHOWS THAT IF U CAUSE ENOUGH TROUBLE U GET YOUR WAY
looks like the police like the action!! lol
I love it straight to the point “the Cornerstone”
and come on you guys STOP FIGHTING!!!!!
the more you fight over the stone the more retarded you look and you make Lubavitch a WAR-ZONE….
only good things! Moshiach now 😀
–ELI
It won’t help and it doesn’t make a difference who puts up what plaque… The stone itself is not comfortable in that spot and will do anything in order not to become built in. That stone was supposed to be the foundation of a structure that was never carried through. The Rebbe himself spoke about that fact with great anguish. Watch and see how the stone pushes off any plaque… just a matter of time….
The less you write the more it means to each individual. Well done!
So what does it say now??
Welcome to Lubavitch!
this does not say one way or the other…much better this way!!!! it leaves room for everyone!!!!!!!!!
