Nosh World, once the dream destination of Crown Heights children and visitors for ice cream, sweets and snacks, is ending its 25-year run this month.
The long-running Kingston Avenue shop is currently offering 50% off all items in an effort to empty the shelves and freezers before it voluntarily closes its doors.
Owner Moshe Machputz said he plans to “close down for renovation.” When asked about details of the plan or timing, he said “when I’ll open you’ll see. I don’t want to talk about plans.”
Until then, he says he will miss his customers.
“People liked coming here, especially kids,” says Machputz. “I know I’ll miss some of my clients. They liked that I remember their names and sometimes I gave a lolly or ice cream to them on the house.”
While speaking with COLlive.com, a woman walks in and shoots a question in Hebrew. “Ma, ata soger?” she asked if the rumors of the closing are true. He assures her that he is renovating and will reopen. She gives him blessings for success and livelihood.
“We will reopen,” Machputz tells us again. “It’s just that here in Crown Heights you cannot say anything because before you open, someone will come do something before you.”
He certainly knows the neighborhood’s DNA having opened the store in the ground-level and narrow space in 1987. At the time, he did well and opened Kingston Pizza across the street in February 1990 with his brother.
“A few months after I lost my brother I was in a bad mood and things didn’t go well,” he recalls. “When I got back into business, some friends convinced me that I can’t run 2 businesses at once and that I should sell.”
And that, he says, was one of the bad business decisions he has made over the years.
There was the before-it’s-time Ice Castle which closed, Kingston Pizza which was sold, his refusal to expand the space and not taking up the chance to purchase the building he is located in.
“G-d is running the world,” he reminds. “I have people who want to invest but I’d rather get a loan and do it on my own – not myself – because Hashem is with me, I’d rather Him as a partner.”
The nicest experiance in Crown Heights. He is a nice guy and I loved the ice cream. You expansion will be even more successful.
you were the first to open a kosher store with a modern touch. whatever you’re planning, please don’t open another eatery. tthere are sooo many on kingston avenue, some of them are bound to run into financial problems for lack of enough customers to go around. all the best.
are you going to stay open for chofbeis shvat- ?!! please-have pity on all the shluchim kids who cant get kosher milchig icecream!
True what he says about people in CH stealing your ideas because they don’t have original one’s of their own. Be focused on your new dream, and you will be successful.
i loved your ice cream it was so good you were a very good man hope to see u again the best ice cream store in the whole entire New York city!!!
Why would anyone in CH renovate and improve?
Ha ha ha ha…
I happen to love this very very very decent man.
🙁
I want ice cream
There is to much competition on Kingston Avenue, there are about 5 ice crem stores in a 5 block area. I wish you nothing but the best Moishe

Awww We wil miss this kind man and his hiemeshe store!
I loved your post… Ahh nostalgia. It would be nice if COL did some “remember whens” and mix some of the old with the new.
Moshe! Muchas Hatzlacha! Let us know if you need help starting the new business and we are there!
Hes a good man
He always calls me Ginji (hebrew for readhead) when i come.
he’s opening up a bar for the new slice of nite life.
Moshe, always with a smile ! It is the best store in CH!
I lived only 1 year in CH, in 1991, and always remembered me
He knew my kids, that never lived in CH, and always gave extra staff to my small daughther

Kids Kinus Hot Spot during “Kingston Shopping”…
Looking forward to a grand new opening!
Much success!
where are they going o go on sunday for the girls kinus??
[sweet expressions to expensive]
I LOVE GOING THERE EVERY CHOF BEIS SHEVAT WHEN I GO TO NY FOR THE KINUS…
the first store to have a complete seperate freezer for the milchig icecream and pareve icequeen, and seperate dips for the milchig and pareve, after learning about allergies, he cared about each child.
yes I also have tears in my eyes .when I think back to my childhood memories Nosh world was a big part of it….
I remember going in and being greeted by a smile and a quick question “so how is your brother“ he knew everyone by name.
I remember that was 20 years ago and i just saw him again
he still remembers my brother and my name
I have tears in my eyes as I write this.
There are not alot of stores that are on first name basis.
May you be Matzliach Moshe in all that you endeavour.
whenever i went to crown heights thats where i always went first. i am going to miss it so much!
Feeling so nostalgic. So little remains as it was in the “good old days”. I was a teenager when you opened. My first yr Bais Rivkah High. Can that have been a quarter century ago?! The first such store in the ‘hood. I now live in the NY area – not in Brooklyn. But when I do come in every year or so – Moshe recognizes me (despite my added weight!) and even asks about my sister who moved to South American 20 years ago! We got our first ice cream cakes in your store. We’d never heard of them… Read more »
Before you open maybe go and sit down with a finical planner and then decide what to do.
מה אמר ה’ ליהושע אל תעבוד כל השבוע
my dentist will be losing business
i have such wonderful memories of getting ice cream there and now i always go in with my kids! and moshe is always so nice to us, its amazing
it was always the most pleasant shopping experience in CH. You buy a $2.00 ice cream, but they make you feel better / more welcome than in other stores when you spend $200. Not only Moishe himself is a most pleasant person, but he has very good staff working there, too. And the ice cream was great – just comes out better than most other places. Really hope it’s only for the better! Moishe, hatzlacha rabba!

Moshe,
I loved how you made me feel when I was a child coming into your store! You are a special person and I wish you much luck on the growth of your store!

I don’t live in NY. You made me feel like a celebrity every time I came into your store!
I love nosh world!!
such a rarity today. Moshe always says hi when he sees me on the street, its so uncommon for a store owner these days to have such genuine care and interest in his customers.
I wish him Hatzlacha, and I hope that whatever he does next will maintain his warm and friendly appeal.
y r stores closing on kingston?
we must support our own…
Only went into nosh World once or twice when I lived there, but will make an effort to go in when I come visit with my kids. So many things are being said about this special store owner.
Sounds good to me. The store is too narrow and I dread ever going there because you have to literally squeeze in to get to the back. I’m sure whatever he reopens with will be much better. While he may have opened Kingston Pizza in the current location, I don’t believe he opened the earlier Kingston Pizza I used to go to a block or so away.
I wish Moshe hatzlacha in his store renovation. He remembers his customers and always has a kind word and a smile. Other merchants in Crown Heights can learn some interpersonal skills from him.
This is a comment from a mother whose daughter
(not religious today) shared with us her experiences with
Mr. Machluf as not just a store owner, but rather a person who took a sincere interest in her as a person and so at least at this point, as her mother, I would like to express sincere appreication for your genuine ahavas yisrael and may Hashem bless you and your family withthe best of health and only true yiddishe nachas. Thank you.
pretty amazing! i hope you make your store spacious, beautiful, clean and well stocked. hazlacha. also you should think of one signature item that only you have, not any other store in the neighborhood….belgian waffles?
made my families move to the states easier! nosh world was our safe haven, ur warmth, jokes , teasing , mock tantrums and of course yummy goodies were a blessing for us . we love nosh world and u’d better stay open because crown heights will never be the same with out u!!!
il miss nosh world!
my fave place to get lemonheads and fireballs 🙁
When it first opened, I was a teenager and my friends and I would find any excuse to go there! Moshe knew all of us by name. I don’t frequent the store as I am not a teenager anymore… now my kids do…but whenever I come in, he remembers me….
I took my children & now my grandchildren to Nosh World BH. He is a lovely man with a good word for everyone. Hatzlacha !!
I remember as a child growing up in the 90’s, Nosh World was the #1 spot on Motzoi Shabbos. To this day, each time I pass by that store, they still have THE SAME popcorn aroma which they had 20 years ago. Good Times! Moshe still remembers my name, even though last time I walked into the store was when I was a kid. He’s the nicest store owner on the planet, each time I come to the store I reminisce of those good ol’ days growing up in CH in 90s. Hatzlacha Moshe! Can’t wait for the Re-Opening! Ill… Read more »
Moshe is the nicest man on Kingston Ave. And it had nothing to do with the new ice cream parlour at Union and Kingston opening. Moshe gave his scoops so generously and if you weren’t happy, he would give another one for free. Such was the man. Mi- Moshe Le- Moshe, Ein Kaan Moshe. Hey I wish your next half of your life more successful with gezunt and contentment.
dont close4 before cof beis shevat paleeez
As a Tamani we all like you so please make a nice clean store much more hatzlacha
when i first came to CH when i was 5 my sister told me on the plane that if behave she will take me to Nosh World.
I couldn’t believe it!
I spent the whole plane ride thinking what would this whole world of Nosh look like.
Moish, your a good hearted jew, god bless you where ever you go. Much Hatzlacha,
Yes, you remember when I was a teenager, and what I turned into over the years….its all your fault! Too much candy!
Reb Moish we wish U all the best – Great Hatzlocha – We cant wait for the Grand ReOpening – with warm wishes The Klein Family – Reb Daniel Reb Abba and Kids !
Moshe did not manufacture anything in his store. Anything he used to prepare ice cream sundaes etc had reliable hechsherim. I never had any problem eating his ice cream, and all of his packaged goods were clearly marked.
the headline says closing, but he says he is just renovating and will reopen? So shouldnt the headline be “closing to renovate and have a big grand reopening?”
pleas be open wen i come for kinnus…that y i come…for nosh world!
i hope when he renovates he gets a hechsher on his store or shouldnt be allowed to reopen
but hopefully better
there was no trip to CH without visiting Nosh World
Hatzlocho Rabbo to Reb Moshe, an honest and hard-working man
moshe,
you and the store will be missed, my kids did grow up there especially my daughter who loved you like an uncle as she saw how you cared about her.
you should have hatzlacha in all you do and cant wait to see you reopen with oll its splendor
I always look forward to going in there. There is always a very heimish, happy feeling. Moshe- you are the best candy man.
Im gonna miss it! 🙁
Hi Moshe – you started it all!
