Governor Kathy Hochul made a special visit to Crown Heights on Wednesday, speaking for a small crowd at the Jewish Children’s Museum, a landmark in the Brooklyn neighborhood.
The Governor announced that New York State will be awarding a grant of $4.5 million dollars to the museum for their new fifth floor exhibit, which will showcase a journey through the ages focusing on antisemitism and will be dedicated to Ari Halberstam.
Governor Hochul spoke of her longtime friendship with Devorah Halberstam, co-founder of the Museum which is named for her son Ari, who was murdered in a terror attack in 1994.
“Devorah has channeled her personal tragedy into triumph for others, making sure that no mother, no parent, ever again has to endure the pain of losing a child to horrific acts of barbarism.
“She lost her son Ari 30 years ago, and Ari lives though all of us. Many others would have retreated into their pain,” Hochul said. “But there are those who walk among us who have been blessed with the courage and the belief that they can leave this world a better place than they found it or what the world was for her own family,” she said.
Devorah’s dedication to helping others “is the conviction, the passion, that brings me here today, but also has changed the laws, changed how people deal with hatred and antisemitism and how we deal with terrorism,” Hochul said. “Thousands of people view the world differently because they saw it through the eyes of a grieving mother.”
The Governor praised the museum as an institution that is part of the solution to antisemitism and hatred, through education.
“Antisemitism is not something that has just crept up now, it has been there for centuries, thousands of years, but always the story of the Jewish people is one of resiliency…they never allow themselves to be beaten down, always rising up,” she said.
She praised the Museum’s education of thousands of children “when their minds are still forming and their hearts are still open. No child is born understanding what hate is – that is a learned reaction,” she said. “To foster the sense of understanding that becomes part of who they are when they become adults.”
The Governor also spoke out against antisemitism which is on the rise in New York state and around the world.
“As Governor it is my responsibility to protect every one of you. You have a right to go to your synagogues or yeshivas without fear of not just physical attacks but verbal attacks,” she said.
“I will continue funding law enforcement and our units to fight hate crimes…and I will continue to call it out on the college campuses as well.
“I will not stop until we turn the tide. There is no harboring of hate in the great state of New York,” she said.
Devorah Halberstam thanked the Governor for the grant and said that the Museum knew the answer to antisemitism 20 years ago – education.
“We have had over 3 million visitors from schools across the city, state, and country,” Halberstam said. “Culture through education – what better way to teach kids?
“When public school children come through the museum, their eyes are bright, they hear and they listen, and they accept and they embrace,” Halberstam said.

Moshiach NOW!
$4.5 million to the museum is nice. Thank you. I just want to remind everyone that in NYC, the government spent an average of $30,000 per child in public school last year. Our schools got around $2,500 per child (and they’re threatening to take even that away). There are about 5,000 children or so learning in our community schools. If we got what they give to public schools, that would be about $150,000,000 (one hundred and fifty million!). But they throw us a few dollars, take a few pictures, condemn antisemitism, and we’re expected to be grateful and say thank… Read more »
It should be dealt with as two separate things.
1-Thank you for this donation.
2-Demanding more funds for our schools.
If you’d like the same amount of funding as a public school, then maybe adhere to the public school curriculum?
Why would the state give money to someone who does the opposite of what they want you to do?
Yet, they do give.
So be grateful and enjoy your food stamps
Thank G-d we don’t adhere to the public school curriculum. They took G-d out of the picture and its horrific! I am a proud Yeshiva parent and not once did my child try to steel someone’s bike/ scooter. Punch a black kid in the face. Or acted in such crazy manner. My children are proud with their Gender, and will eventually like to settle down happily married with a beautiful family. In our community we have created our very own Ambulance force that will help anyone, our very own police alliance group many we are a very beautiful community without… Read more »
Because the state is paying with OUR tax money.
…Until Hochul fights for harsher prison sentences for criminals who steal amazon packages, or punch or stab Chasidim of the Rebbe, Hochul should rest her head in shame.
There will sadly be many more Ari’s if your proposed Vital Brooklyn project goes forward.
I hear your point but… such thoughts are forbidden – especially to put something like that in public writing!
אל תפתח פה לשטן
Or alternatively
טראכט גוט וועט זיין גוט
Hashem is watching us and there will be no more!!
I’m wondering if going through the history of anti-Semitism in such a big display is a good idea, even if it will be followed with Jewish pride exhibits? Would mentioning it not be enough? Being that this museum is for children who should associate Judaism with Joy and tolerance and might not have the need for detail in this at such a young age, etc.
No matter what we do, it’s never “the right thing” by goyim. If this is something good for the Jews, it’s the right thing. If it’s not, it isn’t.
The right thing for Jewish or non- Jewish children.
Why don’t we make a display that’s kid friendly about the 7 mitzvos!
The amount of things that I wanted to write……but whatever. I’ll wait for Moshiach for real change to happen.
Can’t fight against money and interest.
Did the Governor address the fact that both NYS & NYC are funding the brand new construction and daily costs of nearly a dozen homeless shelters costing over 1 billion dollars in South Crown Heights?
Nice to see money channeled to a good cause. (Note the word channeled, since Hochul is simply directing taxpayer money). Will the Museum perhaps make one day a week free (thanks to this fund), similar to the Botanical Gardens, making the museum’s fantastic exhibits accessible to all?.
That’s incredible B”H ! Please use the funding to allow crown heights children free entry Thank You!
or how about more climbing fun and jumping equipment so the kids can get their energy out in cold weather
Can we have a special price/ or no cost days for crown heights residents?
Hochul should not be welcomed in CH!
She is literally building thousands of apartments for homeless, mentally unstable and formerly incarcerated people here.
Destroying our quality of life and Putting our families in danger while we honor her.
What a shame!
