Kosher cookbooks are hot sellers, according to Judaica stores in many parts of the country.
One quipped: “Instead of taking the time to teach daughters the art of kosher cooking, most mothers nowadays simply buy one of some 90 kosher cookbooks now on the market, including the popular Kosher by Design (Susie Fishbein) and Joy of Kosher (Jamie Geller) series.”
A number of other cookbooks are in the works, according to sources which may very well bring the total to well over 100 by the end of 2015.
By comparison, in 1980, said one Judaica store owner, he could recall only three, led by the popular “Spice and Spirit: The Complete Kosher Jewish Cookbook” published in 1990 by the Lubavitch Women’s Organization.
Amongst the new cookbooks planned is Jewish Soul Food by Carol Green Ungar. Set for release in Spring 2015, the author claims that it “is the first ever Shabbat and holiday cookbook, to include not just recipes but in depth explanations of the deep meanings behind our most beloved Jewish foods.”
One Judaica store said that despite his full selection of seforim, ranging from the Talmud to ordinary sidurim, the cookbooks represent more than 25% of his overall sales. By comparison in 2000, it was less than 10%.
Thank you
Go to her sight and order it 🙂
best ever!!
I totally agree with number 1. It’s about time CA published a cookbook! Like hello!
There is still no cookbook that can take the place of spice and spirit or “the purple cookbook”, while the newer ones are fancier the old classic cookbook is ten times more simple and usefull, and loaded with recipes, close to 1000 I think.
Actually, the second edition with the purple cover came out 1990. The original Spice and Spirit by N’shei Chabad came out 1977.
So many recipes are available online … Also imamother.com is a treasure trove of recipes all made by regular yiddisher mamas in the kitchen… So I’m surprised people are buying cookbooks when there is such a wealth of recipes for free online
This is my favorite book, i use it all the time.
By comparison, in 1980…he could recall only three, led by the popular “Spice and Spirit”…published in 1990…
I wish busy and brooklyn had a cookbook. She is incredible!
