On Tuesday, August 2nd, Jewish activists and community leaders met at the home of Sorelle and Shimmy Idels in Kew Gardens Hills to speak with Congressman Lee Zeldin who is running for Governor of New York.
Represented were activists from Queens, Flatbush, Far Rockaway, Five Towns, and Crown Heights.
Joining from Crown Heights were local businessmen and Crown Heights activists Max Coen, Yitzchok Rimler, and Chaplain Raphael Mihalovich.
During the meeting, Zeldin reiterated the need for change in New York, citing the rise in anti-semitic attacks as well as the recent challenges facing yeshivas.
Zeldin also outlined his strategy and goals when he would be elected, and called upon the Jewish community to help vote out Katy Hochul in the general election.
The Crown Heights Republican Committee stated: “Lee Zeldin is one of only two Jewish Republicans in the House of Representatives, and has proved to us that he has our best interests in mind. He is truly the only person who will do what he says he will, and we need a strong advocate now more than ever.
“We strongly request from all residents of Crown Heights to go to a voting site, and vote for Lee Zeldin for NY Governor.“
But in what world would an orthodox Jew vote for a republican? It’s antithetical to Torah.
How is it antithetical to Torah? Or is this comment just bait
If your policies hurt others, then there’s no way to be a Torah observant Jew while simultaneously supporting such policies. It’s hypocritical.
That’s why we vote Republican 🙂
Conservatives are the worst, point proven.
And probably deliberately so. The point is that Democrat policies hurt others.
in politics empathy does not work.
what one side does is hurting the other
if we are kind to everyone, that means we are kind and compassionate to no one
being compassionate to criminals is being mean to victims.
and torah is nothing about empathy, look at punishment for breaking shabbos skilah
torah is laws to keep, that following it will make you into a better a moral person.
So when the Torah teaches us about chessed and kavod and ahava and kedusha and midos and tzedaka, Hashem intended we uphold these qualities and actions but without empathy and compassion?
That seems insane and impossible, and it may potentially mean you’re not a very genuine person.
But imagine upholding these amazing qualities when your heart is in the right place! Think about how much more beautiful the mitzvah would be!
Do mitzvos with compassion and empathy and it will change your life for the better.
To paraphrase:
‘He who is compassionate to the cruel will ultimately become cruel to the compassionate.”
The basis of Chabad Lubavitch is to love all Jews for who they are, exactly as they are.
If an individual doesn’t keep kosher, does the rabbi turn them away from davening in shul? Or does the rabbi invite them in and include them in the beauty of Judaism?
We show compassion to all people, regardless of what aveira one has committed.
Only Hashem can judge, while our job is to love.
One who doesn’t keep kosher isn’t tearing at the fabric of society, and isn’t (openly) hurting others. So yes, your compassion for them doesn’t impinge on anyone else, and you should draw them closer to observing that and other mitzvos.
One who commits crimes, whether theft, assault and battery, etc., is directly harming others as well as himself. True compassion, then, is to prevent them from doing so; that benefits both them and their victims. While the false kind of “compassion” that amounts to making excuses for them is indeed cruelty to both them and to their victims.
Much of this crime is prohibited under 7 Mitzvos B’Nei Noach.
It’s been prohibited even before Jews were commanded to keep Shabbos.
Some people seem to have trouble following even the most basic rules for society.
Compassion, in such cases, is very misplaced.
Bring back being whipped to within a breath of the criminal’s life and much of this nonsense would stop.
This is horrible.
Where did you study Torah?
Maybe we need to fix our education system if we’re churning out people who believe in whipping another human being, especially in the name of religion.
I can’t imagine what Hashem must be feeling watching humankind warp His beautiful Judaism into something so hateful.
I agree with you! Not keeping kosher isn’t tearing at the fabric of society and it isn’t hurting others. Neither is getting an abortion. Neither is banning guns. Neither is demanding equal rights for black people and other minorities. Neither is letting two people get married if they love each other. That’s why I don’t understand how a Jew could vote against these progressive policies. The way we treat a Jew who doesn’t keep Kosher is the same way we should treat all people, even if they don’t abide by our beliefs or laws. Progressive policies hold so much good,… Read more »
Abortion on demand is treating life with contempt, and that spills over into other areas. Banning guns leaves the law-abiding at the mercy of criminals. Equal rights for black people and other minorities have been the law for three generations now. What you want is more-than-equal rights, such as “affirmative action” (which is to say, legalized racism). Some life styles cheapen human relationships and promotes immorality. So no, not a single one of those “progressive policies” “holds so much good,” or indeed any good at all. Frum Jews, who study the real Torah and practice it, realize that. People whose… Read more »
Democrats hate Israel and Jews. Just look at their voting records.
It seems you haven’t been paying attention to the current political states of our two parties.
tell us. Which party has the anti-Israel and anti-Semitic “Squad,” and which does not?
Being anti-zionist does not mean you are anti-semitic. It is vital to remember and understand this distinction.
I’m an orthodox Jew and I’m an anti-zionist.
The “Squad” aren’t anti-Israel because of principles such as those in Vayoel Moshe. They’re anti-Israel because it’s full of Jews.
Probably the same world that sees rampant anti-semitism among the ranks of the Democrat and ilLIBERAL parties.
Everything about the Democrat party, from its inception and support of slavery, to its modern day version of “progressivism” and Leftism which are entirely the opposite of the values and morals of Torah. From its roots of supporting the slavery of people kidnapped from abroad, to Jim Crow to destroying inner cities with welfare, to the modern day sacrificing of babies in the womb to Molech and social justice – the exact opposite of justice – to trying to prevent people from having free speech and the right to protect themselves with a gun, the Democrat party is a disaster.… Read more »
You ask in which world a Torah-true Jew would vote Republican? How about starting with: in a world where G-d, religious thinking and observance are still important, and where acceptance of the fact that The Aibershter created a world in which He grants greater parnossah to some than to others and it is THE TORAH that dictates that the parnossah be shared with those who were granted less, not some wealthy politician who has squirrelled away enough to live in luxury for two lifetimes while taxing the middleclass to death. BTW, send regards to Bezos, Obama, Pelosi et al when… Read more »
Lee Zeldin, please know that the Jews in Crown Heights support you, even if the CHPAC doesn’t
Please speak for yourself. I don’t support Zeldin.
I thought the Community Leaders and Community Activists all supported the current administration.
After all, look at all the photos and food.
Are we now supposed to turn our backs on the wonderful Government officials who have helped us so much?
After all, thanks to them, we’ve achieved no bail, full-time speed cameras, a thriving rat population, and thefts and other crimes in numbers not seen in recent years.
I’d never support an election-denier, insurrection-enabler and Trump-supporter, no matter how good I thought their policies were. Traitors are traitors are traitors are traitors.
This comment on COL gives me so much hope in the future of America, democracy, and Judaism. Thank you for being a good person!
Did you support the election-denying Democrats in 2000, 2004, 2016 and 2018? Or were those different because reasons?
They were different because they didn’t lead to an attack on the capitol that was instigated by the president, resulting in this country coming dangerously close to losing our democracy and the very foundation of everything we stand for.
That seems like a major difference to me.
No, they just led to, for example, an attack at a congressional baseball game that was intended to kill multiple lawmakers, and actually ended up grievously wounding one. Seems like that’s much more “dangerously close to losing our democracy” than stealing Nancy Pelosi’s lectern, you know.
If you haven’t been watching the Jan 6th hearings, then you’re just poorly informed.
But if you have – like all responsible Americans should be – and you can still equate a baseball game with the attack on our capitol, then you’re just not a very good person.
I’ll daven for you!
Not “a baseball game,” but _a shooting_ at one. You know, the kind of thing that would get you screaming about gun control, if the victims weren’t Republicans.
The young woman who was shot and killed by the police inside the Capitol? That attack?
I beg you to watch the Jan 6th hearings and with Gd’s help you will understand how insensitive your comment is.
The show trial? The rigged leftist propaganda? That “hearing?”
A hearing is supposed to present both sides.
Please look at the state of your state before philosophizing on matters that don’t really matter.
I see you lads working hard taking care of the community. To see such capable and good-looking men taking care of their own is a beautiful thing!!
I hope you’ll run for office because you know you have the support of the boys
He was already attacked which shows that the current forces of evil consider him a threat.
The CH Jewish Community Leaders/Askunim can endorse Governor Hochul all they want, Nobody will listen.
The fact is that the Frum Jewish NY Residents/Voters will All be voting for Republican Lee Zeldin, I’m just stating a very obvious fact that the sooner our Askunim realize the better.
Same will be in Boro Park for Congress District 10 Jewish candidate Brian Robinson who shares our Frum values.
These ppl that Call them selves “community leaders “ all they have done for us is bad for this community the Democrats are horrendous and all they have done is Bring crime to an all-time high it’s never been like this before let’s vote for Lee Zeldin and make New York great again
Pirke Avos…Yidden should not get involved in Government since they will use us in their time of need only to forget us later .
How many times this happen in our history .
תודה רבה שלום
It doesn’t say to not get involved in government. It says to be careful when dealing with them, because they’re helpful only when it serves their agenda.
Will our local mainstream “activists” do anything but support the incumbent , establishment Democrat hack?
Pass the food please, and smile for the photos.
Nice to see some new faces getting involved.
to those that say they won’t vote for zeldin cause he’s a trump supporter i would like to know if you’ll rather have someone who cares for the murderer rather then the victim then go ahead vote for the democrat hochul and watch quality of life in the city and state get even worse then it is now or you can think about others at least if you don’t care for yourself and maybe give lee zeldin a chance since he has proven himself in the last 12 years in congress as a true friend and much more aligned with… Read more »
