Rabbi Mendel Fogelman of Yeshiva Chabad of Central Massachusetts update about their location crisis:
The IRS auction to sell the Yeshiva building was held this past Friday in the IRS offices in New Hampshire. This was a silent bid auction and bids were required to be submitted by mail by 10:00 AM on Friday.
We are happy to report that, thank G-d, there were no bids, and therefore we managed to pass a vital first step in the process of reclaiming our Yeshiva property.
But our battle with the IRS has just begun. While the building did not fall into the hands of a stranger at the auction, the future of the Yeshiva building is yet to be determined. Our debt must be dealt with and satisfied. We have a meeting set up with our local IRS agent next week.
We are in the process of writing an Offer of Compromise, but we do not know how much the IRS will accept; hopefully, much, much less than the $477,000.00. In the meantime we are appealing to serious worldwide philanthropists who may be in a position to give us larger donations. In the words of one philanthropist, “Call me when you have raised $125,000.00 and we will talk.”
As of this time, we have close to $49,000.00 in a special account from donations raised through the Save the Yeshiva website. We are humbled by the outpouring of help from alumni, supporters, and especially friends that do not have any direct connection to our Yeshiva.
In fact, 48 shluchim, who are debt ridden and constantly under the gun themselves, got together and decided to commit $500.00 each. This is an unusual form of achdus that, together with all of the other monies, will enable us to sit down with confidence when we meet with the IRS agents.
There are three things that can happen now.
1. The Yeshiva pays the $477,000 owed to the IRS.
2. The IRS can send the Yeshiva property to the Justice Department which would result in the start of a new foreclosure process.
3. The Yeshiva can submit an Offer of Compromise to the IRS in an effort to negotiate the amount that the Yeshiva can pay. This offer would be based on available funds, a yearly budget, and other required information. The Offer Unit would make a decision on whether or not to accept the compromise based on our submission.
We are stunned by your acts of kindness. Thank you does not come close to expressing the depth of our gratitude. We intend to bring the list IY”H to the Rebbe with all the names and amounts. This is especially timely this week of Chif Daled Teves, when 50 years ago the Rebbe demanded extra tzedoka be given and asked that Chassidim empty their pockets.
We ask all of you to please help us and continue to get the word out, and tell people to go to our website savetheyeshiva.com and make a donation. You cannot imagine how your donation whether large or small inspires the next donor.
The link has been all over the place. Here it is again:
