Rabbi Levi Yitzchok of Berditchev had a grandson of marriageable age. Often after morning prayers, as Rabbi Levi Yitzchok removed his tallis and tefillin, a matchmaker would approach him and suggest suitable girls for his grandson. After the prospective girl was turned down, the matchmaker would present another name. This cycle repeated itself several times, until the matchmaker stopped proffering suggestions.
One day Rabbi Levi Yitzchok sent a message to the matchmaker, asking him for a meeting. “Why haven’t you been bringing new prospects to me?” Rabbi Levi Yitzchok asked.
The matchmaker explained that because of the many rejections, he had decided to withdraw from the search.
Rabbi Levi Yitzchok explained the man’s error. “The names of couples are declared in the heavenly spheres before the children are born: ‘The daughter of this person should marry this person.’ The angels then repeat the Divine announcement.”
Rabbi Levi Yitzchok then posed a question. “After such a resonating announcement is made, why would the first suggestion for a fiancée not be the destined match? Why is there a need to hear so many different shidduch suggestions?”
He explained that some angels lack adequate hearing, and that others do not speak well. [It is known that each time one does a mitzvah, a new angel is created. If the mitzvah is not performed properly, the angel is formed with a blemish.] Therefore, some of the angels had heard the proclamation incorrectly, or mispronounced the names.
“Until the correct prospect is found,” Rabbi Levi Yitzchok concluded, “all the misheard names must be mentioned for consideration. Therefore, every proposed match brings us that much closer to the correct, heavenly proclaimed prospect.”
