What if you could learn which presidential candidates your neighbors supported (without getting into any heated arguments)? Well, you can find out who they’re donating to.
The data scientists at Renthop, a data-based apartment hunting firm, have tracked how residents of each zip code in the New York metro area donated so far this election cycle.
The organization compiled individual contribution information from the most recent Feb. 20 Federal Election Commission’s disclosure reports.
Renthrop only included zip codes with at least 25 donors to avoid having a few donors represent an entire neighborhood.
Overall, New York appears to be in Hillary Clinton‘s hands, especially in wealthy Manhattan neighborhoods, with the majority of donations going to the former New York senator and secretary of state.
Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders is more popular with younger, less wealthy neighborhoods in the outer boroughs, upper Manhattan and the Lower East Side.
The more outlying and suburban parts of New York (look at Staten Island, northern Bronx, south Brooklyn) as well as ultra-wealthy Manhattan neighborhoods, such as Battery Park City, were more likely to donate to Republicans, usually Florida Senator Marco Rubio.
Here are the contributions that came from the Crown Heights zip code of 11213: $14,867.49 was collected from 18 local donors.
Hillary Clinton: $3,079 from 4 donors
Marco Rubio: $9,100 from 5 donors
Bernie Sanders: $2,077 from 7 donors
Ted Cruz: $610 from 2 donors
The second Crown Heights zip code 11225 gave a total of $26,152 which was collected from 55 local donors:
Hillary Clinton: $13,968 from 21 donors
Bernie Sanders: $5,462 from 28 donors
Ted Cruz: $250 from 1 donor
And if you wondered how giving are the 11204 residents of Boro Park, the tally is $12,382 from 10 donors:
Hillary Clinton: $7,400 from 3 donors
Ted Cruz: $732 from 4 donors
Bernie Sanders: $600 from 1 donor
Donald Trump: $2,650 from 1 donor
The numbers reveal a fascinating picture of New York that potentially foreshadows April’s primary results. See the interactive below.
