he was born in Belarus (part of the Russian empire) and was a rov in russia. his was father was a rodomsker follower. he used to have a chassidisher kesher on his tefilin shel rosh i.e. it was a dalet not a shlos mem. he once sat in the catzkills (in the 1940’s) and listened attentively to reb aharon zakon A”H review a mamar (chasidic discourse) of the frierdiker rebbe at a aseudah shlishis on shabbos and did not allow someone (who wanted) to prevent the chazorah. there is much much more to tell about reb moishe’s positive relationship with… Read more »
Rav Moshe was invited to give a Shiur when 770 was inaugurated as the Lubavitcher Yeshivah. My father who was a talmid muvhak of his as well a family friend, recalled that although he was pressured not to go, he responded “Yidden willen lerne toirah – geh ich.” (Jews wish to learn torah – I am going)” My father and other MTJ talmidim went along for the shiur. Rav Gedaliah Schorr – Rosh Yeshiva of Torah Vodaas also went into the Rebbe by the Levin wedding. When the Rebbe called for people not to abandon the Shechunah, Rav Moshe came… Read more »
Pl see Rabbi Yisroel Jacobson’s story w Reb Moshe in 1939 that bespeaks him being a Litvishe Talmid Chocham. I’ve discussed it w Rabbi Jacobson’s grandson, Rabbi Laibel Altein and also heard directly from his father Rabbi Mordechai Altein who knew REb Moshe well, that he was a Litvak.
In responce to Rabbi dalfin’s comment: Rabbi Geisinsky brought hard core FACTS that reb moishe ZT”L was born in russia to a chassicdic father, was a rov in russia and even wore tefilin, in the early years of his life (at least till he came to america) with a kesher of a dalet (not a shlos mem as is the litvishe custom). Are FACTS not stubborn things?! it is one of those facts that the litvishe crowd like to avoid revealing and talking, why should we assist them in this “cover up”? no doubt that reb moishe ZT”L in gan… Read more »
Really look forward to this every week.
In addition to your enlightening info on diverse relationships of communities perhaps you can shed light on why and how Chabad customs are so different even to an extreme of other hasidic groups. Respectively. Thanks
The rebbe would gift Reb Moshe with an esrog before sukkos. I heard this from rabbi werner from monsey who one year got it from the rebbe to give to Reb Moshe.
I just saw your video about Reb Moshe, firstly, Yasher Koach for all your great research! You mentioned that Reb Moshe did not give a reason for not taking the job at 770. I heard from my Uncle, Rabbi Dovid Scheiner A’h, that he spent time with Reb Moshe in the bungalow colony and he told him that the Frierdiker Rebbe wanted him to be the Rosh Hayeshiva in 770, but at that time there were people that wanted to build his Yeshiva, Mesivta Tiferes Yerushalayim and therefore he asked the Frierdiker Rebbe reshus not to take the job in… Read more »
