New York City has been in recent years widening the sidewalks which they say will help with safety of pedestrians walking the streets.
But there is a downside to it: It is becoming more and more difficult to find parking in our neighborhood of Crown Heights. Add to that the growing number of residents and year-round visitors.
What can help this situation is drivers being more alert when they are parking their vehicle of any size.
There are numerous times that all I needed was 2 inches to park my car, but the cars were taking up the space of two parking spots.
Please be considerate of other drivers when you park your vehicle. Just leave enough space for your vehicle to go in or out of the parking space.
All it takes is a moment to check if you are parked well, while for the other it can take 10 minutes or more to find another spot.
Thank you for reading this and taking another driver into account when parking your vehicle.
Here are a few photos of how some people park in Crown Heights:
this community needs a parking lot….. im sure ppl would be willing to pay to ensure no parking tickets and there are plenty of empty lots….
Come on #36 you know she ment 2 more inches to the current spot left for parking. This has happened to me also. You try to park your car and you need just another 2 inches to finish your park.
How can you park your car in two inches?
While we’re on the topic….
It is rude and totally inconsiderate when people block someone else’s driveway/garage. Even for a minute. Especially without leaving clear contact info on the dashboard.
This is not a joke. Anyone who has a driveway should definitely park in the driveway AT NIGHT so others should have a spot.
This is a great article, I hope now people will be more aware of where they park
Come on #27 you know she ment 2 more inches to the space that was there already. I agree full heartedly to this article.
It’s not a big deal to be considerate of others when you park.
I know of at least 4 people on my block who own homes with driveways which aren’t being used and yet they street park their cars.
This is due to sheer laziness and total disregard of anyone elses needs.
Also, I particularly enjoy it when cars park exactly in between two parking spaces on a residential street , presumably to hold the second spot for a friend, and thus depriving other people of the limited parking spots on that street.
“There are numerous times that all I needed was 2 inches to park my car.” … Pretty small car…
ROFL!
Can’t the evil regime in the Peoples Republic of Brooklyn paint yellow the pump area so space is not wasted when parking?
I guess they cannot… the tickets they get are not expensive enough.
I think Mendy Pellin did a piece on just this topic a couple years back.
What a great insight.
At least now i will be more careful when i park.
What’s really the issue?! Everyone please be more considerate when & where you park, especially beginning & end of blocks. On many occasions I have to spend 20-30 mins bcs on every block don’t park like considerate human being. PLEASE use every inch wisely! Park by the white line & NOT 8 feet from it! Also fire hydrants is 15 feet from either side and not 25 feet! By a driveway pls park all the way up! Think about ur someone else ur brother/ sister/ neighbor or even ur self! Lets tip the scale with one more deed and bring… Read more »
I agree but what happens when it’s just after the street is cleaned and people start parking? If there are no defined parking spaces then people park all over the block and there will inevitably be unbalanced spaces. Perhaps they should mark parking spaces to avoid this.
Thats the answer!!!!
I also live in Sheepshead Bay and NOBODY has scratched up bumpers whilst EVERYONE does in CH!?!?!?!
You obviously don’t have any kids and never do airport runs.
Really Crown Heights residents are pretty sad. I live in Sheepshead Bay and there is no alternate side on my block. The block got together and kicked out the sanitation department. You will rarely find a piece of garbage on the floor. Now I’m not saying Crown Heights is ready for that but I work in CH and to have alternate side 4 times a week? That’s pretty SAD. You guys can’t get together and at least make it twice a week…it’s your fault nobody else to blame for that. Since the residents don’t stand up and change it I… Read more »
Putting your cell phone number on your car when duble parking, would be very helpfull to the person you’re blocking in, and make you a conciterant person
PS WHEN DOUBLE PARKING DOUBLE CHECK THAT THAT CAR IS NOT HATZALAH, YOU CAN TELL BY THE PLATE WHICH SAYS EMT AND MOST DRIVERS LEAVE A HATZALAH JACKET ON THE SEAT OF THE CAR
agree
and there are many more examples too
it’s not always that simple
still, wherever one can, one should be careful
Other states have lines on the street where the parking spot is, so you automatically have to stay within your parking space. NY should have that too!
Get a smart car or a fiat 500.. than you wouldn’t have to worry so much about parking..
FYI though your not fined for double parking during alternate side, bare in mind its NEVER legal to double park on a block with a school. Though often the police overlook this, they can – and plenty of times do ticket for it.
The majority of times that i have seen while this is occurring it was normally because a larger vehicle or two smaller vehicles pull out and then another smaller one pulls in, and then it seems like somebody had parked selfishly while in reality there is nothing further from the truth.
There are many more important things then to TRYING TO DICTATE to others how they should park and assuming people just don’t care.
We should always naturally assume that people are not doing things because they don’t care.
I TOTALLY AGREE
everyone who has a garage or driveway would park in their garage or driveway (instead of making it into a bedroom or warehouse) then we would have no issues with parking
All of us that drive are aware that the police don’t ticket us for double-parking during “alternate side parking” hours BH(of course, you can & will be ticketed two minutes after the correct time to move !!) The situation I would like to address is that drivers who double-park then often leave their car for over an hour, trapping the car that is parked on the legal side of the street. This has happened too many times to me as well as to other neighbors & friends, and it has caused many missed appointments, missed flights, and real needless aggravation.… Read more »
Oh, BH.
This is a great article, I hope everyone sees this. It simply means that all the other issues have been resolved, and now we turn our attention to parking.
And one more thing: we don’t need soooooooooooo much space next to the fire pomp!!!! as if the fire truck will make a parallel parking on a emergency situation… ridiculous!!! ( – amerikanishe kop…)
I do agree fully, however consider the fact that some come and some go, which would at times leave a bigger space than the actual size of the car one is driving. It’s not always avoidable..
Yes, you’re right, but on the other hand, the reckless driving, parking and getting out of spaces have torn off my license plate and dented my car. So maybe there’s a reason people leave a lot of space – they are lousy drivers!!!!
Not to mention the local car rentals who show little concern for the residence and their parking needs when they routinely take up as many as 20 spots on a given block .
Its a disgrace that u cant park on one side of eastern parkway on shabbos
thank you Mrs Laine
hope everybody reads this
it would help pepole save time and/or having to walk a few extra blocks late at night
But sometimes someone is parked behind two cars, and they both leave, and another big car takes the space – which makes it look as if one is taking up one and a half spots..
who says which car was there first maybe it was never taking up 2 to begin with, the infiniti deserves 2 spaces – 1%!
once a week cleaning the street and less tickets, oh and we dont need to clean the streets on shabbos on eastern parkway so when our guest come for weekends they will not get tickets
