An unhinged man was nabbed for hatching a plot to rob a Brooklyn synagogue and then fight off cops with pipe bombs and guns, the New York Post reported today.
Elias Narvaez, 21, allegedly made anti-Semitic remarks as he crafted his plan, explaining he was targeting “an Orthodox synagogue on Montgomery Street in Crown Heights because its gold-colored front doors suggested the congregation was wealthy.”
“He wanted to rob Jews,” a law-enforcement source told The Post.
Narvaez’s idea was to use a bomb to knock out the lights, and then enter the darkened building to hold up the congregation with a Glock semiautomatic pistol and a revolver.
Narvaez reportedly believed the darkness would help him ambush responding cops. “When they come, we will start shooting at them,” he told an informant. “I’ll throw a pipe bomb at them . . . If I die, I’ll die.”
Seargent Bobby Troice of the 71st Precinct confirmed to COLlive.com that the shul was in fact Bais Binyomin at 680 Montgomery Street between Kingston and Albany Avenues.
Troice said the 79th Precinct in Bed-Stuy had arrested the individual for possession of handguns and had made the statements to the New York Post.
Cops were seen patrolling the shul today and speaking to one of the shul’s gabboim, Laima Minkowitz.
They told him there will be police protection all throughout the day (Friday) as a precaution, even though the individual was arrested.
They did not say whether the patrol will be there on Yom Kippur which begins at sundown on Friday and ends on Shabbos night.
Either way, Minkowitz told a COLlive reporter: “We’re not scared and the davening will continue as planned.”
