For those who grew up in the mid 80’s, a well-known voice was heard over the radio every Tuesday at 6:00 pm. It was that of noted educator and master storyteller Rabbi Yosef Goldstein (“Uncle Yossi”). For over 10 years, Rabbi Goldstein hosted Tzivos Hashem On the Air, a half-hour children’s program packed with Jewish content. It aired on WHBI which reached tens of thousands of homes across the Tri-State area.
Beginning with his trademark, “Shalom dear children and shalom to everyone, this is your Uncle Yossi inviting you all once again to come and enjoy another of our weekly programs called Tzivos Hashem on the air!” thousands of Jewish children got to know the man with the friendly voice as he shared Jewish stories, songs, and timely lessons about Jewish life and upcoming holidays. A highlight of the show was story time. Dozens of exciting Jewish stories were serialized over many weeks (many are now printed in the Uncle Yossi’s Big Book of Stories series, and children would return each week to hear the next installment. Families from all across the Jewish spectrum made sure to tune-in during dinnertime, entertaining their children while inculcating authentic Jewish values.
Recognizing the timeless value of these programs, Chabad.org has posted a selection of 10 episodes on their acclaimed children’s site, with plans to add more from the collection over time. Now everyone can take a trip back in time and enjoy this vintage collection of age-old goodness!
