A Lag Ba’Omer bonfire exploded tonight at the Biale Hadlaka in Stamford Hill, London.
Before the Biale Rebbe lit the customary Lag Ba’Omer fire, he spoke of the significance of burning the Yetzer Hara, specifically mentioning the nisayon of smartphones.
He then proceeded to place a phone into the fire and light it. The phone exploded on contact, ending the singing and dancing of all those gathered to celebrate the Hillula of R’ Shimon bar Yochai.
Hatzaloh gave medical attention to about twenty people who were injured in the blast.
Earlier this evening we provided a mega response team to a major incident as a result of a fire explosion, alongside @Ldn_Ambulance @LAS_HART & @lfbhackney, Multiple patients were treated. pic.twitter.com/I7q0GQ14Z8

Yes it wasn’t a good way to deal with the situation, but the idea is just as fire can be harmful to the body, so the computer-like smart phone is distructive to our souls. Which means we shouldn’t have internet, or we should have only Kosher smart phones or a simple plain phone. They are a big nisayon for this generation.
Whether the phone caused the explosion or not it was stupid to throw a smartphone onto a fire
There’s a story that someone gave the alter rebbe a silver snuff box and the Alter rebbe broke off the top to use as a tefillin mirror instead of for gashmiyus. The Rebbe corrected the story saying it doesn’t make sense that the Alter rebbe would destroy something like that. Instead what he did was removed the hinge pin and separated the top. These Rabbis can learn a thing or two from that story. ps to 16 How do you know that? Also the galaxy 7 was banned from airplanes because it could explode. Obviously it wouldn’t be banned if… Read more »
The crowd was kept behind metal barricades at a significant safe distance. It seems there the crowd was really up close to the bonfire. Maybe this is the problem. I’ve seen what seemed like small explosions in the fire in years past, but no one was close enough to be injured.
I saw a picture of the can before the fire started
I dont know how much was in it, but this is the cause of the explosion, not a phone
Are you kidding me i havent seen anything more ridiculous!!! Throwing phones into a fire wow genius!!!!
Sad situation, refua schleima immediately to everyone injured. Smart phones are the modern instrument of choice for the ‘smart’ yetza hora, be careful!
The smartphone did not cause the Blast
1 the explosion happened right away and that wouldn’t happen of a battery
2 even if it was the battery it wouldn’t make such a explosion even if it would have been a car battery…
Will the rabbanim get a knas for taking out a smartphone in public?
That’s what happens when you try to be too frum
Names for Tehillim?
Indeed. The most balance response.
It’s sad but I can’t help but laugh… Maybe god is telling them to elevate the phones instead of sending the “sparks” (pun intended) back to heaven :0
Actually, a lesson one can learn is that smartphones are not the problem. They are a tool. How you choose to use it is the challenge. Leaders are good leaders when they teach how to make decisions not to make decisions for others, not to remove choices. Teach how to walk not become someone’s crutches.
Why are you focusing on that?
there are people who got injured; focus on saying tehillim for them instead of saying what should have happened.
A mistake was done, that can’t be taken away. What YOU can change is the fact that people are suffering from the explosion.
1. There are plenty of smart ways to get rid of smartphones, throwing it into a fire is dangerous and misses the entire point. Take them to a recycling facility so it will actually help the environment.
2. How were the photos featured in the article taken?
Smart phone batteries are Lithium batteries which are very volatile and explode if punctured or burned
Maybe someone needs to teach rabbonim a little chemistry
Put in beforehand and the batteries together with fuel will do that (fuel itself can’t) DON’T MIX IN YOUR CRUSADE WITH THE DAY CELEBRATING RASHBI!
there is a video going around whatsapp, the fire was already lit and the phones put in.
What is “bad fuel?”
The phone battery is combustible, put it in a fire and it will explode.
Y r they throwing thier phones
Really smart
In zchus of Rashbi, They should all have a refuoh shleimo Mentaly, and understand that the one that gives a smart phone is the oibershter only, and no one else, – and it should be used only for good purposes.
If you watch the video, it explodes II the fire is lit. Unless the batteries were all punctured and battery acid poured over the fire, that would not happen. This was simply a case of bad fuel
In zchus of rashbi may all the injured have a complete recovery!!!
