Rabbi Yosef Goldstein, the veteran educator and master storyteller who inspired generations of young and old with his memorable stories and parables, passed away Thursday, 25 Adar 5773.
He was 85.
For over 30 years he has worked as Associate Principal of Bais Yaakov elementary school of Boro Park. Tens of thousands of young students have benefited from his kindly guidance and instruction.
Rabbi Goldstein also spearheaded numerous educational projects, among them hosting the popular radio show, “Tzivos Hashem on the Air” which he hosted for 10 consecutive years for Jewish children throughout the U.S.
But it was his stories that he was most known for and which defined the world of Jewish storytelling and inspired generations of young and old with his memorable stories and parables, conveyed in a wholesome and captivating manner.
Affectionately known as Uncle Yossi, he released some 14 audio tape cassettes with over 50 stories and songs relating the eternal ethics and morals of our people.
Ever since releasing his first record in 1972, with the blessings and encouragement of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Goldstein has become a household name, almost a legend, amongst youngsters throughout the Jewish world.
He carefully blended stories, parables and tales of Tzaddikim in the albums which were geared to instill love for Hashem, the Torah and the Jewish people, the three pillars of Yiddishkeit, in the minds and hearts of youngsters.
“Joyfully, I raise my hands to Hashem to thank Him for the merit of having been able to devote my life’s energies to the field of Chinuch al Taharas HaKodesh, Torah-true Jewish education,” he once commented.
“Words cannot express how gratifying it is to behold hundreds of Jewish children, on occasion, even thousands of them, all pure Jewish neshomos, proudly pointing in all directions as they declare in song their firm Emunah that ‘Hashem Is Truly Everywhere’.”
For many years later, Rabbi Goldstein continued to be involved in Jewish outreach and education, in Poway, California, where he resided in recent years.
He is survived by his children: R’ Aron Goldstein – Ann Arbor, MI; R’ Sholom Ber Goldstein – Crown Heights; R’ Yitzchok Goldstein – Madrid Spain; R’ Levi Goldstein – Crown Heights, R’ Mendel Goldstein – Crown Heights, Mrs. Toby Lieder – Sydney, Australia; R’ Yisroel Goldstein – Poway, CA; Mrs. Leah Perl – Los Angeles, CA; Mrs. Shternie Ulman – Sydney, Australia and R’ Zalman Goldstein – Monsey, NY; grandchildren and great grandchildren.
The Levaya will be on Friday, leaving shomrei Hadas at 9:00 am, passing by Bais Yaakov at 10:00 -10:15 – 46th st bet 13th 14th ave, and passing by 770 at 10:45 am.
Shiva will be at 692 Montgomery St. (Near Kingston Ave.)

I remember the summers that Rabbi Goldstein was the camp rabbi in CGI Detroit. We used to chant “We want a yes dear children!” And Rabbi Goldstein would tell us to efirst say, “Yes, Rabbi Goldstein,” and then he’d respond, “Yes, dear children” same way as on the tapes. The stories, halachos and divrei Torah he shared during the summer were so memorable and with me still, 30 years later.
everyone should read it! its a must read.

amaizing update
He had a very unique sense of humor which made people of all ages laugh
Who remembers
He used to explain that on pesach chometz represents “hepech hatov” and matzah represents kdusha
Then in a humor all his own he would say
Bechol sor vador omdim olenu Le-“CHALA”-seinu, vehakadoshbaruch hu “MATZA”-lenu miyodom
Despite his vast knowledge of Chasidus, kabbala, Astronomy and physics, he never lost the ability to go down and relate to the level of his student even if the student was a child.

It always began with Uncle Yossi’s story time! For those who arrive 30min early before the minyin started He left a very string impression on me His commentary throughout davening made it very real!! He would tell us that there are 26 keys Ki Leolam chasdo Also Till today I’m careful to say ashrei 3x a day which he said guarantees a yid to go streight into Gan Eden. Also He also made a strong positive impression on me re birchas cohanim After modim of chazoras hashatz He would always remind us to look at the chazan to recieve the… Read more »

I just want to share something I found so special about my Zaidy. His Emunah and connection with Hashem was so incredible! Every time we’d visit, and until his last days, he would give us a lesson why we need to thank Hashem, and how we can make everyday special seeing Hashem’s hashgacha pratis. Hashem was every part of him. He would spend many hours davening. We can all remember him meticulously saying each and every word of his tefilos. May we take all that he represented and with his emunah and love for Hashem and make it apart of… Read more »

I am #45, Sarah Michlin.
in my time Bais Rivka didn’t have all grades yet. Lubavitch girls went to Bais Yackov and Rabbi Goldstein would teach us Tanya every Shabbos afternoon. Yasher Koach.
He truly exemplified using one’s talents in serving Hashem.
His legacy is an inspiration for all of us.
Its so special to see all the beautiful things people are writing about Uncle Yossie…He definitely deserves all these praises and many more. May Moshiach come immediately NOW, when we will be reunited with our dear Rebbe and all his Chassidim together with all of our fellow Yidden!
Baruch Dayan Ha’emes. Rabbi Goldstein’s levaya is 2th of Adar, on the yahrtzeit of Sara Schneirer (1890-1935), founder of the “Bais Yaakov” girls schools.
Would enjoy the seders Uncle Yossi used to lead for the college kids for many years in Ann Arbor. How Uncle Yossi had us all say all the Shnemars out loud was just great. Years later my children and I listen to his recordings before bed and just love his sweet voice filled with Ahavas Yisroel. The shine from his hechal must be just blinding from all the Yiddishkeit and Ahavas Yisroel he and his children have spread out over all the years. He will be sorely missed. Moshiach Now!!!!!!!!
Thank you, R.Goldstein for privilege to witness your living legacy being grandmother of your great grandchildren and mother-in-low of your grandson.
My condolences to the family. Hamokom Yenachem Esshem BSoich Shaar Tzion V’Yerushalaim.

you can get the CDs. your grandkids CAN know him!
May Hashem send us moshiach right away so your grandkids can really know him!
…who will be the zeidy’s of our children? Who will be the zeidy’s if not we?
No he didn’t really live with us, but one day a week my children could chok a chianik without getting into trouble. My grandkids are too young to know him, I hope someone will step into Uncle Yossie’s shoes to be a living role model the way he was for so many years.
Condolences to all the family, and to klal Yisroel. We lost someone really special.

I recall as a boy going to his Tanya Shiur early in the morning. He would teach complex concepts in such a simplified manor. He would come over to me after Sachris, and take a special interest in where I went to school, who my teacher was, what I was learning ect. I would excitedly tell my friends that I went, which was of more interest during his visits to school to sell his Records. In the air right after the hack a tshinick march we would recite shema on The air.
I also remember he would come once a year to our class in oholie Torah and we would be able to hear a bit of his new tape on a cassette player he brought along and would allow us to being home either a tape or record and either bring money the next day or return the tape. Indeed a magical memory of my childhood.
