In an innovative new project, the Mayan Center will host a runway show featuring the stylings of local designer, Eve Emanuel.
Can fashion be modest? Can modesty be fashionable? There are a few individuals who make it their business to prove that the answer is a resounding ‘Yes’.
Liel Maximov, the co-founder of the Mayan Center, is always on the lookout for unique ways to utilize her prime space on Kingston Ave (the former location of Nosh World). Often hosting inspiring and creative events such as Zumba, ballet, Circus Art, art classes, and concerts, she began searching for a way to feature an oft spoken about matter in Crown Heights – tznius and fashion. She knew that she had found a partner in fashionista Eve Emanuel.
Eve, the founder and designer of the More Than Just Figleaves clothing line, creates clothing for the modern day woman who wants to dress with both style and dignity. From the influence of her seamstress grandmother and her father who worked in textiles, Eve was born with style in her blood. The London-born Flatbush-living designer approaches her work with a specific mission statement: Modest clothing should be comfortable, versatile, chic, and elegant.
“I create clothing that caters to the modern modest woman,” says Eve. “Modestly dressing women should have options of fresh and funky pieces to wear on a daily basis.” Utilizing only quality fabrics and craftsmanship, each garment is one the wearer will feel confident wearing.
Eve’s clothing will soon be featured at two separate events for women:
On January 20th, the clothing line will be on display at the United Lubavitcher Yeshiva as part of the 15th Russian Junior N’shei Convention run by Nyrit Sarytchev and Rochel Feygin.
On February 8th, the Mayan Center will be transformed into a Fashion Week worthy runway show.Together with Art of Life it will host event which will feature local models and the talents of several neighborhood hairstylists and makeup artists, “We want to involve the talented women in our own community.” Says Liel.
The elegant event invites women to enjoy a concert by featured singer, Ester Freeman and dance performance by Ester Stern founder of Eat Sleep and Dance as well as wine and cheese as they view classic and never-before-seen styles from the More Than Just Figleaves collection. The audience will have the opportunity to have a fun night out and enjoy the show, as well as buy items from the collection.
Eve believes that the definition of tznius goes beyond the exact mandates of halacha. “Modesty is more than lines. It is also humility and dignity. It’s in the air. It’s in the way a person carries herself.”
On February 8th, women will have the opportunity to see that modesty and style have never been more synonymous.
