It doesn’t get lower than this.
A young Jewish man has been arrested in the southern Israeli city of Ashkelon as a prime suspect in the burglary of a local synagogue a month ago.
An intensive police investigation led detectives to the home of the 26-year-old in search of Torah scrolls and the contents of charity box stolen from a Sephardic shul.
The young man initially denied involvement or connection to the robbery which had congregants heartbroken over the desecration of the sanctuary and holy articles.
When detectives searched the man’s home in the afternoon hours following his interrogation, they discovered 4 Torah scrolls wrapped in sheets and hidden under beds in his home.
The scrolls seem to have been found in good condition and were returned to the gabbai of the shul who lovingly kissed and hugs them upon their return.
Israeli police said the suspect will be brought to court to extend his detention.
