A historic and joyous occasion was marked on Sunday by Chabad on Carlisle-Jewish Russian Center of Balaclava, Victoria, Australia as the community celebrated the inauguration of a new Torah.
The Torah was donated by the Danilov family in memory of Shalmu Danilov.
It is the first time in twenty-five years that this wonderful event has occurred in this community and it was particularly poignant as the donor family are members of the Jewish-Russian community themselves.
Having long been denied the ability to practice their Judaism in the former Soviet Union, it was an overwhelming occasion for them to be able to do it now, so openly and demonstratively.
It was celebrated by over 250 members of the Chabad on Carlisle community and other well-wishers who attended the final letter writing of the Torah, completed by Rabbi C.E Gorelik.
Proceedings were coordinated and directed by Rabbi Yisroel Sufrin.
All accompanied the Sefer Torah in the procession to the Center. The Chabad on Carlisle Sunday school children also followed the procession, for these children and many of the parents, this was a unique, much treasured experience.
Members of the congregation were openly moved to tears as they delighted in this wonderful celebration of the Jewish law.
Lively music and dancing marked the happiness of the congregants who were clearly touched by the occasion. All then partook of a sumptuous L’chaim.
