Thousands from around Israel attended the funeral Thursday for Rabbi Mordechai Shmuel Ashkenazi OBM, Chief Rabbi of Kfar Chabad.
The funeral left from his home in the Kfar Chabad village, where he served for 40 years as the Chief Rabbi, and continued to the central Shul and 770. He was buried in Teverya near his father.
In attendance were Sephardic Chief Rabbi Yitzchak Yosef, Jerusalem Chief Rabbi Moshe Shlomo Amar and Aguch Chairman Rabbi Avraham Shemtov.
Rabbi Ashkenazi, a renowned scholar and authority on Jewish law, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 71, after a sudden heart attack.
During the funeral, the Chabad Bais Din of Israel announced the appointment of his eldest son Rabbi Meir Ashkenazi as the new Chief Rabbi.
