There is an epidemic that no one is talking about. It’s more contagious than covid. It’s more contagious because we get it from ourselves.
Type 2 diabetes, obesity, heart problems, high blood pressure, strokes, and all kinds of other issues. It’s caused by unhealthy eating and lack of exercise. Just look at pictures of weddings, l’chaims, dinners, on this web site and you’ll see what I am talking about.
You’re at a wedding. You grab some finger food at the smorgasbord. If you’re like me 7 years ago you got to the women’s side because that’s where the good stuff is. You are careful. Maybe you only have 3 or 4 small portions. Or you use one of those small plates and feel good about yourself because you’re not eating that much. Then you go to the chuppah. Maybe you had to walk from Oholei Torah to 770 and back. Hey, it’s strenuous. You are expending calories. Then you go to the ballroom. You wash. After all, it’s a seudas mitzvah. You eat a roll or two and then you have the entrée. Usually, it’s fish or a blintz or maybe both depending on how much the baal simchah spends. Then you eat some of the salads that are on the table and the soup with croutons or with a bread stick. Maybe the bread stick is whole wheat so it must be healthy. You go over to the head table to say l’chaim to the choson and machatonim. Gotta have some farbeisin. Oh, I forgot. Chances are you probably ate something at home before the wedding. After all, who knows when they are going to serve. And let’s not forget about the sweet table. I was at a wedding recently where there was a sushi spread as part of the sweet table. So, now you’ll probably load up on those little cakes, the hot apple strudel etc. And sometimes they put out all kinds of hot food for the people who only come for the simchas choson v’kallah. What’s the harm in having some of that, after all, you’ve been burning calories dancing. So, tell me, why are you eating the main dish? You’ve already eaten too much!
Six years ago, in March 2016, I had a wakeup call. I was 59. I was overweight. My doctor put me on blood pressure pills. I didn’t want to take pills; one pill begets another. I embarked on a health journey. I changed my eating habits, took up running and slowly weaned myself from the pills. Along the way I got rid of 75 pounds, gout, severe acid reflux from a hiatus hernia, and got my blood pressure under control.
Was it easy? No. Did it take time? Yes, a long time. Was it worth it? Absolutely.
I’m not going to give you advice. I’m not a doctor or nutritionist. All I can do is tell you about my experience and hopefully you will be inspired to do something for yourself. Because you can!
I did two things. I started exercising and changed the way I eat.
At the time I was doing some walking so I decided that I would try running because I read that running revs the metabolism more than walking. When I started, I couldn’t run more than 200 yards without stopping to catch my breath. I would start out walking and then run a little and then walk some more. Over time I started lengthening my running time until I was running a 3-mile route without stopping for a walk break. It took many months until I was able to run that distance but once I did, I kept adding mileage in small increments. And in June 2018, I ran my first full marathon. That’s 26.2 miles.
Exercise only represents about 10 to 15% of weight loss. The rest is intake. So, I stopped eating lots of stuff. I like to tell people that I cut out vitamin K. What is vitamin K they ask? Knishes, kugel, kreplach, karnatzel, kishkeh. I didn’t deprive myself. I eat a danish occasionally. I cut out a lot of the garbage and started eating healthier. One thing I did not do is go on a “diet”. Did you know that the diet industry was valued at $192.2 billion in 2019? Do you know what it is built on? One word: FAILURE. 95% of people who go on a diet will gain back all the lost weight and then some. Be honest. How many diets have you been on? If you are one of the 5% then kol hakavod!
How did I do it? I cut down on portion size. We really don’t need to fill our plate with food. Instead of eating a dinner plate size portion I eat an entrée plate size portion. The brain only registers fullness 15-20 minutes after eating. You think you are not full, but you really are. In fact, The Rambam says (Hilchos Deos 4:2) that you should only eat 75% of what you now eat. Now you know why. You don’t have to fill the plate. I also eat fruits, vegetables, nuts, and dried fruit. That’s where I go when I want a snack.
Slowly the weight came off, my running increased, and my overall health greatly improved. It took a long time, and it wasn’t easy. There was a point in the process where I reached a plateau and the weight stopped decreasing no matter what I did. That was probably the hardest point in my journey. It lasted about six months. I persisted and then the scale started to move down again. I got rid of 75 pounds. My current weight hovers around 150, my acid reflux disappeared completely, and I don’t have gout attacks. I’m 65 but I feel much less. BH, I can honestly say that I feel better now than I did at 40. Aging is inevitable; being old is a choice.
And the pills. I stopped taking them a long time ago. I kept them as a motivator. If I wasn’t in the mood to run, I looked at them and was out the door! I recently met my doctor. I thanked him for prescribing them! On November 7, 2021, I threw them in the garbage at the finish line of the New York City Marathon!
You can do what I did. It takes time. It takes patience. It’s not easy. Don’t get discouraged. I walked the walk, so can you. You don’t have to run marathons. Exercise 3-4 times per week for half an hour each time. A brisk walk, bike, swim, treadmill, whatever. Anything that gets the heart pumping. Eat better. There is no such thing as “I can’t”! It can be done. I did it, so can you! I call it the 3 P’s. Persistence, Patience, and Perspiration! The weather is good; get out there!

Stay healthy and have a wonderful summer!
I reveresed type two diabetes via Healthy Keto and intermittent fasting.
No Insulin, No unnecessary medications. Just real self control and I feel amazing!! BH! Check out “Dr Jason Fung, and Dr Ken Berry…..”
Made me starving…..how do I get invited to such a wedding?
Cutting calories and starving yourself is torture and unsustainable.
Cut vegetable oil and carbs and you will lose weight without starving yourself.
Also exercise improves health but has nothing to do with weight loss.
I guarantee anyone who cuts carbs and vegetable oils that they will lose weight majorly and be healthier by all measures.
100% true. In my experience people that suggest “balanced diet” have no understanding about food addiction.
I’m sorry to put a but if you are overweights for a long period of time you are food addicted. Period. Convincing yourself you’re not is part of your addiction. Basic!
The only way to get off is through a very very low carbohydrate diet. And the more natural the better.
When you exercise you sweat, when you sweat you lose pounds.
People who overeat, the source is unhappiness. Or to gain strength when the source is coming from mental health. If you are happy about yourself – who you are and what you stand for (not family, friends or community, just yourself) just by being you, that is the best self loss diet there can be.
How can you just group everyone’s struggle into one category? This is a very ignorant comment. There are a myriad of causes for overeating, including medication side effects, hormonal disorders, and genetic conditions. And I’ll tell you, there are many people who are much happier eating what they please rather than undereating/starving themselves. The person who everyone applauds for losing weight and getting “healthier?” They’re going through chemo. The heavyset woman who is always eating? Type 1 diabetic, who will literally die if she doesn’t eat every 3 hours. The neighbor who suddenly put on 50 pounds? He has chronic… Read more »
You speak about Dan lkaf zechus (ruchnei )and you preach non stop about mental and psychological conditions (gashmei) . If you are happy about your life, you wouldnt have medical conditions to begin with. Stress causes all kinds of illiness and people tend to endulge in food for relief. So learn psychology and then you’ll understand. Its 1+1=2
I was happy and I was healthy, and got sick. Sickness doesn’t have disparity between mentally well people and not. You can be happy about life and that is a protective factor, but in no way will save someone from a disease hashem chooses to challenge them with.
Losing 30lbs was me starving
Me gaining 60lbs was me still starving
My body has unique challenges and your judgement is of no help to anyone struggling
Mental and physical health can affect each other. But not all some are just plain physical and saying such a statement is harmful and hurtfull
Shaya you should have pointed out how Charlie Buttons was cheering you during the NY marathon.
No it’s not about how much you eat, it’s about what you eat. If you’re eating a whole plate of vegetables and soup and then more vegetables and then fruits, and you eat until you’re full, that’s amazing! And not a small plate of whatever oil filled Splenda portions which are terrible for your health. Don’t limit the amount of food you eat because that will just make you hungry and you will just end up eating a lot less healthy. Instead get the amazing benefits of all the fruits and vegetables and eating healthy and then you will be… Read more »
If you just have to always feel stuffed then it is possible to be overweight even with healthy food. I know lots of overweight vegans…Listen to the Rambam: don’t allow yourself to be hungry but resist the taava to always be stuffed like you are preparing for hibernation in the winter
Look it up, if you do the research you’ll see study after study suggesting that lower caloric (for adults only) intake increases longevity. Definitely not starving yourself but up to 2 modest portions of sufficient protein, healthy fat and nutrients from veggies per day is a way for adults to extend life as well as brain function.
As the above commenter mentioned, read Dr. Furman’s books and it will give you a much better perspective on food and health
Most people don’t need the extreme approach of dr Furman in order to be healthier. But yes do try to eat more greens, beans, seeds and berries
Most studies are not following people for years and many people who have a lower intake initially lose weight and then gain it all back. The links to longevity & BMI have been miniscule at best- yes a BMI over 40 has links to more health issues but 25-40 they have seen no difference – and remember that BMI is not even a proper usage to evaluate weight and health.
Really Really appreciate you being so honest and writing this article.
It has given me a huge boost to reset myself & the whole family.
I was burnt out from diets. Optavia did it for me and I am now back on regular food. I lost 45 pounds
You can do that write up for Shabbos too…. And that’s a weekly thing. More frequent than weddings. For someone who wants to – there’s breakfast, mezonos by chassidus, kiddush club (gasp), farbrengen post davening, lunch and then Melava Malka!!
Thursday night cholent and the erev shabbos kugel and the after shabbos leftovers to finish…
I appreciate the message and the delivery of this post and salute the writer’s journey and wish him continued strength in his decisions and prime health onward. May all who are would benefit from a similar approach, take it.
Isn’t that a chassidic song? Essen ess men, we eat and drink and go on our merry way.
As far as eating the “right” foods like to load up on vegetables…anyone that visited a farm will tell you that there are some really fat cows, and all those cows eat is grass (no kishke, knishes or kugels). So don’t tell me to eat lots of lettuce!
.. is that we are not cows.
It’s more about WHAT you and WHEN you eat. Much less about how much you eat. Eliminate processed carbs and eat low carb. Eat less often.
And exercise is only a small part of the weight loss, although super good for your health.
Read the Obesity Code by Dr. Jason Fung.
I’m anyway already getting asked by so many people about previous comments if they were written by me. So I’m writing one that’s actually from me.
Good luck on your journey!
If you’re a slow reader go straight to chapter 19 and 20 and and you’ll have a very simple plan how to get healthy and lose weight.
Darchei Hachassidus = Simcha and Iskafya is good for you. Who knew?
The more we eat, the more brochos we make.
As we grow and expand, we do uforatzta in all directions- Yama v’keidma tzafona vanegva.
Our shirts and pants need larger sizes as our bodies house our neshsma in a mansion.
We are mevarar netzutos and make a dira b’tachtonim.
I don’t eat for ta’ava, I eat for Oneg and the owners of Oneg need to make Parnassus too.
Just buy the food but you don’t have to eat all of it at one meal
This is the iskafya that we need to talk about… it doesn’t make sense that so many chosidim in our community are overweight unless it is really from yehei shmei raba….
that we are all overweight and there are barely any restaurants here in crown heights
Would like to add that having a good relationship with your children and family is more important than running any marathon. Ask yourself, When was the last time i spoke to my child, my grandchild? Are you giving them love and emotional support? Mental health is equally if not more important then physical health. Call your kids, go on a run with them, and have a heart to heart conversation with them and most importantly, tell them how much you love them unconditionally. Also, Shar habitochon is not only written to give us bitachon in parnassah but in all aspects… Read more »
17 years ago l went to Weight Watchers. I got amazing support and learned how to live a sustainable healthy life style. I still enjoy delicious food but now l eat like a mentch and feel good about being in control of what l eat instead of food controlling me.
The epidemic no one is talking about
Encouraging eating disorders
Thank you for sharing and for the courage to speak up— with your name! It’s a motivator to all.
jogging is not good for the joints
swimming and regular speed walking are healthier
The journey has started
We have a wonderful and supportive community of athletes (walkers and runners) who have participated in Team Friendship events. Come join one of our next events: http://www.teamfriendship.org or on Strava: https://www.strava.com/clubs/teamfriendship
Read Feast. Fast. Repeat by Gin Stephens. My husband and I are so much healthier since following this “health plan with a side effect of weight loss.”
That’s great that you found something that works for you. However, it is not appropriate to post this on a new site-as a PP said, what no one is talking about is the EATING DISORDER EPIDEMIC. Social media glorifying dieting is not something we should be applauding.
100% and giving advice and unsolicited comments on people’s size and shape is not anyone’s place online or in person.
Eating Disorders have the highest mortality rates of all Mental Illnesses.
Thank you for voicing this point that so many seem to forget!
…is not the foods passing through our lips.
It’s the words.
If only the words coming out (affecting everyone) of everyone’s mouths were given as much thought to as the foods going in (affecting oneself)…
I’m overweight?! Tried every diet there is…or even trying to change lifestyle.
not easy. Still overweight…Guess what ..My blood work is 100% normal..no diabetes..no high cholestrol..no blood pressure issues. There is not one size fits all. Good for you for looking after yourself…but Please talk for yourself and not judge pictures of people on Collive wedding albums!
The one thing that works which is to consistently eat a little less and move a little more. That’s all. You don’t need special food or go hungry or run a marathon
For many people, it’s not as simple as that. Factor in sleep, hormones, genetics, medications…
You forget that everyone has different Caloric needs, and many Ashkenazi jews actually have genetic mutations (INSR gene is one example) causing insulin resistance which makes weight loss incredibly difficult!
THE DIFFERENCES: The Italian says, “I’m thirsty. I must have wine.” The Frenchman says, “I’m thirsty. I must have cognac.” The Russian says, “I’m thirsty. I must have vodka.” The German says, “I’m thirsty. I must have beer.” The Mexican says, “I’m thirsty. I must have tequila.” The Jewish man says, “I’m thirsty. I must have diabetes.” _____________________________________________________ When I told this to a young Chassidishe man in Boro Park, he said that it fits in so well. In addition to Shabbos and Yomom Tovim, there are all sorts of events (e.g. Chasanas, Shalom Zachors, Brissim, etc. You eat… Read more »
In a few words, this is my story of struggling with food… I was always hungry, craving sweets, crunchy, greasy, creamy, etc my weight was 250 Lbs, and my height about 5.1 You go the picture I had high blood pressure, high cholesterol, rapid heart beat and mental anxiety, probably depression too…medicines? galore, for all of the above… Until I got to the tooth of the problem. I eat when I was anxious, sad, happy, fearful, overconfident, underconfident, I can add situations ad infinitum Until I realized (and accepted) that my problem was nonother than ADDICTION I know someone could… Read more »
Amazing!!!! What an inspiration!! Preach preach preach!!! Thank you for sharing this and spreading awareness!! This article is gold!! So proud of you !!
All the medical conditions one may have and all the unsolicited advice you may receive & EVERY natural diet hasn’t changed your physical health- remember that it is not your fault.
I highly recommend reading Joshua Wolrich’s book: Food Is Not Medicine
He brings down resources & cites his sources. Anecdotal evidence will not be something that works for everyone
