The 68th birthday of Rabbi Avrohom Gerlitzky, a beloved maggid shiur in Beis Medrash Oholei Torah, was marked with a grand party on Tuesday.
It has become a tradition among his students since 1981 to go all out in celebrating the day with a lavish farbrengen, fliers and gifts.
The students say they do it as a small token of their appreciation for his warmth, kindness and dedication to his students for over 40 years.
“Rabbi Gerlitzky is the best Magid Shiur in the world,” they told COLlive.com. “He puts his heart and soul into teaching, and he has thousands of grateful students who feel the same way.”
Tuesday morning, local residents noticed birthday greetings on large posters on street poles and fliers on cars throughout the neighborhood, sponsored by the Printhouse.
Entering the school building, which was decorated in honor of the occasion, the Rabbi was surprised with a grand farbrengen party complete with pizza, herring, sushi, salad bar, pasta buffet and even a chocolate fountain, graciously sponsored by Raskin’s, Sauce N Cheese, Sushi Spot, Wine by the Case and Kahan’s Superette, who were all thrilled to participate in the special day for the dedicated Rabbi. The party was made even more festive with live music by a flute and guitar players.
The bochurim presented Rabbi Gerlitzky with a gift of a new recliner, which the Rabbi tested out with a big smile.
A beautiful cake, sponsored by Glick’s Bakery of the Marketplace, was presented as well.
The farbrengen continued with surprise guests stopping by to give birthday wishes to the Rabbi, including his brother Rabbi Menachem Gerlitzky, brother in law Rabbi Yisroel Shemtov and various other relatives.
Earlier in the day, the team at Charidy, Inc. presented Rabbi Gerlitzky with a surprise gift – the launch of a 24 hour Charidy fundraising campaign to raise $16,000 for Haoros Ubiurim, his compilation of chiddushim submitted by bochurim from yeshivos worldwide.
