Moishe Sirota was one of the young men that would get their daily dose of spirituality from the Aliya Teffillin booth.
It was the summer of 2014 during the war in Gaza that Moshe Loekinsky (member of Aliya at that time) and some of his friends were farbrenging about what they could do for Israel. They came up with an idea that Aliya should try to get 1000 people to wrap Tefillin, share and tag the picture #Tefillinforisrael.
Pictures started popping up all over facebook from guys all over the world putting on Teffilin for Israel. To further expedite their success our members decided to open the first Teffillin booth on Kingston Ave. And so they did. It worked miracles. Guys were stopping their motorcycles, bikes and cars and rolling up their sleeves to wrap by the dozen. Women and children were stopping at the booth to say Tehilim and give Tzedakah for Israel. The ones who were most uplifted from these success of the booth were the Aliya members themselves who could barely believe what they had accomplished.
Almost 2 years later the booth is still in effect every Friday afternoon. In addition to the Tefillin booth there are also some Aliya members that go up and down Kingston Avenue visiting their friends in fast food restaurants and stores to wrap on Teffilin with them.
One of the most dedicated wrappers on Kingston Avenue is Moishe Sirota. Moishe was one of the people that would wrap his daily Teffilin at the Teffillin booth on his way back from work. Since then his life has taken a complete transformation for the positive in every possible way. He is now the most effective “wrapper” on Kingston and mainly because he can relate to them being that the he was just like them, only a year earlier.
Providing physical, spiritual, emotional and vocational support to hundreds of young men each year, the Brooklyn-based Aliya is dedicated to in-reach, helping young adults to become healthy, stable and fully functioning members of the Jewish community.
Aliya will be holding a fundraising campaign on Tuesday, April 12. Stay tuned for details.
