On Sunday August 26th, Crown Heights residents and elected officials will gather to co-name Carroll Street between Brooklyn and New York Avenues “Sarah and Michoel Behrman Way.”
Michoel and Sarah each had found their roots in Crown Heights in the early 70s , with both becoming followers of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, of righteous memory.
The Behrmans resided on Carroll between Brooklyn and New York since 1983, and were the longest Lubavitcher family living on the block.
The New York City Council voted to co-name Carroll Street in tribute to the many lives saved by Sarah and Michoel over the years. Sarah working as an advocate, case manager at HASC, and Michoel as Director of Operation Survival, a drugs prevention program under the National Committee for Furtherance of Jewish Education.
“I am proud to honor the legacies of Sarah and Michoel Behrman with this street co-naming. Their commitment to the Crown Heights community and their critical work to advance education and civil rights is a model for all of us as we aim to strengthen and improve our communities,” said New York City Council Majority Leader Laurie A. Cumbo, who sponsored the co-naming bill.
The ceremony will take place on Carroll Street between Brooklyn and New York Avenues at 12 noon. This street will be closed Sunday for the event.
