Ikar is the new Jewish women’s learning collaborative that opened this past winter in January with an array of fantastic classes, lectures and creative workshops.
Modeled after the Chautauqua Institute’s learning vacation concept, Ikar’s affordable Sunday afternoon programs cater to small groups, fostering a friendly atmosphere for learning and gathering together.
Located at 1714 President Street in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, our staff of master instructors are affiliated with the multi-talented Chabad/Lubavitch community.
For the Spring season, we opened with a special Pesach Sheni program featuring a hands-on workshop learning techniques for making natural dyes from foods and plants that was given by Tamar Adelstein, Ikar’s administrator. From boiling fabric in pots of blackberries and parsley to making dye from marigolds to trying our hand at flower petal imprinting, the workshop was enjoyed by all.
Well-known speaker Sara Tova Best led us in a thought-provoking discussion for Pesach Sheni about the inherent purity of every Jew, based on the Sichos of the Rebbe.
Tzivia Emmer, well-known writer and certified Birren Institute for Autobiographical Studies instructor led participants in a unique memoir writing class. We were given paper and pen and asked to draw a sketch of the bedroom we grew up in after which we went on to describe our memories of it opening up a discussion about the ”geography” of our homes and the way it shaped our outlook and lives. Tzivia will be starting a memoir writing class on Zoom beginning May 24th. For details email Tzivia at [email protected].
Our next program is scheduled for Sunday from 12:30 – 4:30pm on May 29th, Yom Yerushalayim! After joining us for the afternoon, wind up your day in 770 at 6pm with N’Shei Chabad’s Spring Convention inspiring finale.
Chef Rikki Forer will open the program with Treats from the Shuk for your Shavuous Table, a culinary class teaching how to make Halva and Marzipan delicacies you can find only in Machane Market!
Rabbi Mendy Mirocznik, Executive Vice President of The Rabbinical Alliance of America, will join us for tea and a talk celebrating the 55th Anniversary of the miraculous reunification of Yerushalayim. Rabbi Mirocznik is a very engaging, knowledgeable speaker you won’t want to miss!
The program concludes with professional stylist Ariannna Sharfman’s Poppies, Peonies, Agapanthus and More! hands-on flower arranging workshop. Participants will bring home a beautiful flower arrangement to grace their Shavuous table!
