Sparks High School opened its doors when we saw a need for another type of girls high school in Crown Heights.
A school that is dedicated to making sure each girl understands that she has value in this world. That she has a role that is unique and different from the next girl’s and our job is to help her find how she can make a positive difference and elevate the sparks.
They do this by providing a warm, homey, safe environment for the girls to enter each day. A school that they WANT to and are excited to attend every day. At Sparks, each girl chooses which classes she wants to take and thrives in those classes because it is not forced on her but a decision she was happy to make on her own.
Our faculty is one that is accepting of each girl exactly wherever she is on her journey. If a girl, for whatever reason, is less motivated academically, socially or spiritually, she knows she can still walk into school with zero judgement, and receive a lot of empathy, love and words of encouragement. We see that in this way, the girls feel safe, understood and nurtured and can then choose to find the motivation to succeed in the areas that she wants to.
We have adapted a learning style that works for each individual girl so they can all grow at their pace and level, challenging the ones who can thrive with a push and a more gentle approach for those that need that.
Yiddishkeit is a personal journey for each person; therefore, we don’t impose anything on the girls as we watch them each grow in their journey and love the process.
An example of one of the many classes that proves our teaching model is this: During Halacha class, each girl has a few seforim and a tablet or computer. Each girl decides which Halacha they would like to learn about, to better understand and can do the research on their own. The teachers guide the girls through the lesson but the students are learning on their own, focusing on something that they can improve on because they want to. That’s our goal: for the girls to want to know, to want to understand, to do it because they feel it is important, not because it’s something society demands of them.
Walk into Sparks and you’ll see girls who are now excited to learn about and follow Mitzvos that they used to struggle to follow or even dreaded hearing about!
The Lubavitcher Rebbe’s vision on education is clear. A true education — an education for life — consists of teaching children that they have an uncompromising responsibility to G‑d to live morally and ethically, which will sustain them individually and create a better world for their children and for generations to come. We strive to follow his directives on education to instill in the girls the confidence they need and the Chassidishe mindsets to succeed in and change the world.
