Crown Heights has voted Sunday for a 31 year-old attorney specializing in criminal defense as the leader of its secular communal organization.
Not only did Zaki Tamir get the most votes (1105), but he is the only candidate who passed the 50% mark required to be elected for the Vaad Hakohol – Crown Heights Jewish Community Council.
The results came as a shock to the two dozen or so present at the hours-long counting in the basement of 770 Eastern Parkway which ended at 3:04 AM.
Tamir, married with 3 children, moved to the Brooklyn Chassidic neighborhood in 1999, and has won over the voters with his professional-seeming conduct, promising to improve security and social services.
He was not awake to learn about the results. His last communication with COLlive.com was at 1 AM when he was notified of the diverse voting trend.
“Bipartisan Vaad. Huh?” he wondered.
The runner ups who didn’t make the 50% cut are current Vaad Chairman Fishel Brownstein with 1016 votes, 28 year-old real estate broker Yossi Hackner with 942 and veteran activist Rabbi Shea Hecht with 936.
The 3 are set for a run off in a separate election on a date to be set by Rabbi Avrohom B. Rosenberg, the Monsey dayan who called for and monitored the elections following the communal Din Torah he presided.
The count was conducted by an equal number of representatives of Rabbi Avrohom Osdoba and Rabbi Yaacov Schwei who jointly monitored each paper, number and computer chart (built especially for this by Benny Raskin).
While many eagerly awaited results – thousands were constantly visiting COLlive.com for the hour-by-hour updates – counting dragged out due to a complicated and what some may consider overly-cautious system set by Rosenberg.
Tired and sweaty, the 16 volunteers who are counting turned to Shimon Goldberg, an educator in Oholei Torah hired by Rosenberg to keep order and quiet in the room, asking him for drinks “or at least sushi” (They got neither).
2,044 out of 2,064 votes cast were eligible (blanks and any hand-writing was disqualified). Here are the full results for Vaad Hakohol:

We have heard numerous times from the exiting temporary vaad that the psak din vindicated their election. If you read the psak din it says that their election was questionable and explains that they were left as an acting vaad because it was a more practical decision
I do hope the new vaad will quickly be able to find somewhere for Rabbi Segal to sit. It shouldn’t have taken 2 months

When Malamud was elected he was already very well known (and I’ll assume by the fact he was elected, respected)
With Tamir, nobody knows anything about him, he’s just some guy without a full beard.

while rabbi osdoba lost in din torah, he won in the biggest ever attended election in CH

I do believe in the importance of the beard. But, of what purpose is a beard, when it is merely a mask on someone? A beard has no value when the person behind it fights, cheats, steals.. or whatever it is wrong they are doing.
Tamir got in because he was 5th, 6th, 7th choice on most of the ballots. The next in seniority will be even less known Hackner, cause as many pointed out, ppl will either vote for Hecht or Brownstein and Hackner will be second on everyones ballot.
This article and the one about the gabbayim winners were not written clearly. If you didnt know how many vaad hakol ppl were being elected you wouldnt understand y there is being a run off. your theory although a good one does not represent reality. The bottom line is that there will have to be a run off and the bottom line is that Hackner just has to keep his mouth shut, stay out of the way for a few weeks and he is in. The only one that can beet him is himself. So my advice to Hackner, and I know him since he was little (so it might be hard for him to do) keep quite and you win.
Why does this feel like an uncomfortable repeat of the terrible election of our US Pres? Slick, smooth talker, community organizer. Good Luck, first I wanted to leave America, now I want to leave CH, too!

By your logic Hecht and Brownstein should be in since those who voted for Hecht didn’t vote for Brownstein and vice versa. Therefore, combined they represent all members of the community and with Zaki as the “Independent” perhaps they can lead our community forward.
Hecht = Experience + connections, but troubling integrity
Hackner = Integrity, but little experience and no connections.
Brownstein = Integrity + Experience, with limited connections (whatever one year on the Vaad will get you).
By experience I mean life experience not Vaad Hakahal experience.

Well we should just have a vote between Hecht and Bronstein since everyone must vote for two out of three those that vote for Bronstein will not vote for Hecht and those that vote for Hecht will not vote for Bronstein making Hackner the 2nd member of the new Vaad!

In my personal view – this election result is a Shtikel Mapala for Rav Schwei’s camp.
The Rebbe’s Shcuna has spoken loud and clear: Poltrak and Sperlin and company are NOT acceptable to us at all!

I chose my role models I don’t have other people chose them for me, and even if I would, it defiantly wouldn’t be the Va’ad Hakohol. Poltrak, Sperlin, Rubashkin, they are perfect role models, right? These people are neither role models nor leaders, they are our servants. As a Crown Heights resident I am ashamed and embarassed by the elections. The fact that our new “Rosh Hakahal” is a plucked chicked is a BUSHA VECHERPA to a community that “claims” to be Lubavitch-oriented. The Rebbeim were strict about Tzeilem Elokim and the Frierdiker Rebbe wrote that someone who touches his beard shall not cross the threshold of Lubavitch! But here in Crown Heights the most capable ones are the plucked chickens. Nebach. (Disclaimer: I voted for Tamir because he is the most capable and thats the sad part…)

That is absurd, in presidential and congressional election many time there are more than two candidates and the candidates are running against each other. Over here each candidate is running independently against the 50% mark. So if you are going to make comparisons you should try to make sure that they are at least similar cases.
So far we have a total of 514%! I think this may be a mathematic breakthrough!

Well that’s a real stupid way of counting, if you already have the total number of votes then the count should tell you how close they are to 50% of that total not some arbitrary number that has no actual relevance.
